Just like every December 28th for the past few years, today I woke up, drank a cup of delicious, hot, steaming coffee, and sat quietly in an old chair in my backyard, waiting for the sound of singing and the string and percussion instruments of a local group of performers called "Kaituco" to begin to be heard in the distance through the town streets. Then, when that happened, I grabbed my camera and went out the garage door to walk through the streets and "intercept" the group of singers and dancers, guided by the sound... It's something I do every year on this date, and I like to do it this way, appearing unexpectedly around a corner and starting to take pictures. At that moment they even dedicate a refrain to me in their improvised songs... We already know each other; they are people I see almost daily on the streets all year round, but this day is special and they, their group, know that among those accompanying them will be "the crazy guy with the camera in his hand," as some of them affectionately call me...

Al igual que cada 28 de Diciembre durante los últimos años, hoy desperté, bebí una tasa de un exquisito café muy caliente, y me puse a esperar en silencio, sentado en una vieja silla de mi patio trasero, a que el sonido del canto y los instrumentos de cuerdas y percusión de un grupo de cultores locales llamado "Kaituco" comenzaran a ser escuchado a lo lejos en las calles del pueblo. Entonces, cuando eso ocurrió; tomé mi cámara y salí por la puerta de mi garaje a caminar por las calles e "interceptar" al grupo de cantores y danzantes, guiándome por el sonido... Es algo que hago cada año en esta fecha, y me gusta hacerlo así, y aparecer ante ellos de improvisto en alguna esquina y comenzar a hacerles fotos; momento en el cual incluso me dedican algún estribillo en sus cantares improvisados... Ya nos conocemos, son personas a quienes veo casi a diario en las calles todo el año, pero este día es especial y ellos, su grupo, saben que tendrán entre quienes los acompañan a "el tipo loco con la cámara en la mano", tal como cariñosamente me llaman algunos...

The tradition was brought to our town by a practitioner in the mid-20th century from states in the central-western region of the country. Since then, it has remained in our town to this day and is celebrated every December 28th, which is the Day of the Holy Innocents according to Catholic tradition. This dance, or "comparsa" as some also call it, is also known locally as the "Las Locaínas" dance. And in fact, the first stop of each annual procession is at the former home of the person who brought the tradition. There, standing with a photograph of that person, is the eldest of his living granddaughters, holding a photo of him, with the intention of "blessing" the celebration of that day...

La tradición fue traída a nuestro pueblo por un cultor folclorista a mediados del siglo XX desde estados en la región centro occidental del país. Desde entonces se quedó en nuestro pueblo hasta los días actuales y se celebra cada 28 de Diciembre que es el día de "Los Santos Inocentes" según la tradición católica. Este baile o "comparsa" como otros también la llaman, también es conocido como baile de "Las Locaínas" localmente. Y de hecho, la primera "parada" de cada recorrido anual, se hace en la antigua casa de quien trajo la tradición y allí parada de pie con una foto de dicha persona, espera la mayor de sus nietas vivas sosteniendo una foto de él, con la intención de "bendecir" la celebración de ese día...

A few days ago, I had seen one of the group's leaders, and we agreed that I would meet them on a random street that day and take some photos to later convert to black and white, thus having a recent record of this annual celebration. Which, by the way, has fewer participants each year, as many of its older members have left the town, and the young people and children who join are not always enough... However, this time, and for another year, the tradition of "Las Zaragozas" was carried out again, with our local folklorists doing their best...

En días pasados había visto a uno de los líderes del grupo y acordamos que yo los encontraría en alguna calle cualquiera este día y haría unas cuantas fotos para luego virarlas a blanco y negro y así tener un registro reciente de esta celebración anual. La cual por cierto, cada año tienen menos participantes, pues muchos de sus miembros más antiguos se han ido del pueblo y los jóvenes y niños que se incorporan, no siempre son suficientes... Sin embargo, esta vez y por un año más; la tradición de "Las Zaragozas" fue llevada a cabo de nuevo, haciendo lo mejor posible por parte de nuestros folcloristas locales...

I immersed myself in the celebration this time for just a couple of hours, but that was enough to take many photos and experience once again the essence of this local cultural expression. They would then continue their journey until late afternoon and into the evening, even visiting other nearby towns. Finally, as a grand finale, they would gather at the home of one of the group members and celebrate a bit more with music and—of course—a few shots of rum...

Me sumergí en la celebración esta vez durante apenas un par de horas, pero eso fue suficiente para hacer muchas fotos y vivir nuevamente la esencia de esta manifestación cultural local... Ellos, pasarían luego hasta horas de la tarde y entrada la noche, haciendo este recorrido e incluso visitando otros pueblos cercanos. Para entonces, como punto final, reunirse en la casa de alguno de sus integrantes y festejar un poco al compás de más música y -por supuesto- algunos tragos de ron...
