Today, I simply needed to spend some time processing some of my photos. I do this as a form of catharsis, and today, at the end of the day, I really needed it. The way I most enjoy working with my photos is by starting with the RAW image and converting it to black and white, following a handful of steps and techniques that, at this point, are almost instinctive. Gone are the days of learning from hundreds of pages about monochrome photography; nowadays, I work with my photos intuitively, removing the colors and then processing the highlights, shadows, and blacks as if I've known them forever. This helps me relax, and I also understand each photo as having its own unique character, which is why I don't use presets or anything like that. I simply sit down, take the picture, look at it, let the colors fade, and then literally start "playing" with the values ​​in no particular order, immersed in a pleasant chaos which usually ends up turning out quite well, at least from my point of view. Sure, all this sounds unprofessional, but I can allow myself these kinds of "liberties" because I am simply, as the people in this town say, "a crazy guy with a camera in his hand"... 😉

Hoy simplemente, necesitaba pasar tiempo procesando algunas de mis fotos. Hago esto como catarsis, y hoy al final del día en verdad lo necesitaba. Y la manera como más me gusta trabajar en mis fotos es partiendo de la imagen RAW y virarlas al blanco y negro siguiendo un puñado de pasos y técnicas que, a estas alturas, ya son algo instintivo. Atrás quedaron todas las cosas que aprendía mirando cientos de páginas acerca de fotografía monocromática y, hoy por hoy, me muevo sobre mis fotos de manera intuitiva, quitando los colores y después tratando los claros, las iluminaciones, los obscuros y las sombras como si los conociera desde siempre. Y es así como me sirve para relajarme, y también entiendo cada foto como si cada una tuviese su carácter particular, y es debido a esto que no uso pre-sets ni nada por el estilo. Yo simple mente me siento, tomo la foto, la miro, hago que los colores se vayan y comienzo literalmente a "jugar" con los valores sin orden alguno, sumido en un agradable caos el cual por lo general termina saliendo bastante bien, cuando menos desde mi punto de vista. Claro, todo esto suena poco o nada profesional, pero es que puedo permitirme este tipo de "licencias", pues yo soy simplemente, como dicen las personas de este pueblo, "un tipo loco con una cámara en la mano"... 😉

Over the years, I learned to intuit which things I observe would work for a black and white photograph. As the years went by, this also became a bit of a madness, a bit of a delusion, even a bit of a fantasy. It's no wonder I stop to talk to an old door, a cracked wall, a dry tree trunk, or an old bicycle. I even tell them (not in a very quiet voice, I might add) how beautiful their textures or lines are, or simply comment on how the patina of time is evident on them. In short, there's a lot of freedom in understanding my humble passion for photography the way I do...

Con el paso de los años, aprendía a intuir cuales cosas de las que observo, sirven para una foto en blanco y negro. También con el paso de los años esto se me volvió un poco locura, un poco delirio y hasta un poco fantasía. Pues no es de extrañar que me detenga a hablar con una puerta vieja, con una pared agrietada, con algún tronco seco o con una vieja bicicleta. Llegando decirles (en voz no muy baja) cuan hermosas texturas tienen, o sus líneas, o simplemente comentarles sobre como la pátina del tiempo se nota en ellos. En fin, hay un montón de libertad en entender mi humilde afición por la fotografía de la manera como lo hago...

And obviously, years of taking black and white photos have made me lose my fear of overexposed whites, details that disappear into shadows, vignettes, and the messy look. It's also made me intentionally and unintentionally evade a whole host of compositional rules, framing conventions, and so on. That's how these photos end up, most of the time, in a beloved "anarchy" through which I ultimately express myself...

Y obviamente, años haciendo fotos en blanco y negro, han hecho que pierda el miedo a los blancos sobreexpuestos, a los detalles que desaparecen en las sombras, a las viñetas, a lo desprolijo, y también que evada con y sin intención un montón de reglas compositivas, encuadres y demás. Así es como estas fotos se terminan, la mayoría de las veces, en amada "anarquía" a través de la cual termino expresándome...

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7}
