CARABOBO AVENUE - (PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES)

This is a series of photographs taken on one of the most iconic avenues in my town (Montalbán, Carabobo, Venezuela). While this post is about photography, it's also a way to tell you a few things about this street... Carabobo Avenue, specifically its northern section, begins right at the corner of our Plaza Bolívar, where the old parish church of our town is located. In those days, when every deceased resident of the town was laid to rest in the church, it was along this street that the mourners would bring the urn containing the body of the deceased in procession. And after the wake, this was also the street along which the coffin was taken to the cemetery, which was, and still is, located northeast of the town. So this street also ended up being called "The Street of the Dead"... Unlike Bolívar Street (now the town's main street), this street didn't grow with commercial spaces. Instead, the old colonial houses remained (and some still do) inhabited by families whose roots go back to the town's founding. I perfectly remember the 1980s, when my grandmother Olimpia (my mother's mother) would take me along to visit other families in the afternoons, both there and on Carabobo Street. I also remember the old-world charm of that street, which still lingers to some extent today, although many of the old houses have succumbed to time and are now replaced by some of less architectural beauty. It's for all these reasons, and more, that every time I walk down Carabobo Avenue, I can't help but take some photos and, at the same time, immerse myself deeply in my memories...
