I went for a walk through the streets of my town yesterday afternoon, and I couldn't help but recall a phrase my father often used, something like: "Montalbán is a very good town to die of old age in, because here 80 years often feel like twice as long." And now, looking back, I conclude that my father was right about that. I think what Dad meant was: "Because time moves so slowly here, you always have the feeling of having lived a long time, no matter how old you are"...

Salí a deambular por las calles de mi pueblo la tarde de ayer, y no puede evitar recordar una frase que frecuentemente decía mi padre, la cual decía algo así como: "Montalbán es un pueblo muy bueno para morir de viejo, porque aquí 80 años suelen parecer el doble". Y ahora, pensando en retrospectiva, concluyo que mi padre tenía razón en eso. Yo creo que Papá lo que quería decir era que: "Debido a la lentitud con la cual pasa el tiempo aquí, siempre se tenía la sensación de haber vivido mucho, sin importan demasiado la edad que se tenga"...

I was born and raised in this town, and despite the streets teeming with friends, the walks in the countryside, and so much more, when I was a child and my parents took me on vacation to cities or other more populated places, I already made comparisons and understood that Montalbán was a place where life moved at a very slow pace. Then, as a teenager, I dreamed of leaving the town and living in places I imagined would be much more fun. I grew up and studied outside the town, and I practiced my profession for 25 years, which forced me to spend periods of time away, even traveling far from home. And when all that happened, the only thing on my mind was returning to the streets of this place and "living as slowly as possible"...

Nací y crecí en este pueblo, y a pesar de las calles repletas de amigos, de los paseos por el campo y muchas cosas más; cuando yo era un niño y mis padres me llevaban a vacacionar en ciudades u otros lugares más poblados, ya yo establecía comparaciones y entendía que Montalbán era un lugar en donde la vida transcurría con mucha lentitud. Entonces, siendo ya un adolescente, soñaba con dejar el pueblo y vivir en lugares los cuales imaginaba mucho más divertidos. Yo crecí y estudié fuera del pueblo, y ejercí mi profesión durante 25 años viéndome forzado a pasar períodos de tiempo fuera, incluso viajando lejos de casa. Y cuando todo eso ocurría, lo único que pasaba por mi mente era volver a las calles de este lugar y "vivir tan lento como se pudiese"...

And perhaps the most fantastic thing about this story is that, when I finally got rid of all my burdens and could return to this town permanently, life here moved even more slowly than in my youth, because half the people had left, and with them, much of the local economy. Then, by a twist of fate, I ended up confined to these streets which, at least from my perspective, are a kind of "Macondo reimagined." And I don't know if things will change here anytime soon, but I know that even if they did, Montalbán would change at its own pace, which has always been leisurely and simple...

Y lo más fantástico de esta historia quizás sea qué, cuando finalmente me deshice de todos mis lastres y pude a volver a estar siempre en este pueblo, la vida aquí transcurría incluso aún más lento de cuando mis años juveniles, pues la mitad de la gente se había ido y con ellos, mucha de la economía local. Entonces, por suerte del destino, terminé encerrado en estas calles que, cuando menos desde mi punto de vista, son de una especie de "Macondo versionado". Y no sé si las cosas vayan a cambiar aquí prontamente, pero sé que incluso si así fuese, Montalbán cambiaría a su propio ritmo, el cual desde siempre, es parsimonioso y simple...
