You're very correct about the lowered standard of academic in Nigeria as a result of rote learning.

The instructors want to see students answer verbatim what they were taught, not giving room for the students to explore intelligently

It only gives room for laziness. Why do I have to read extensive when a I need to to memorize what I've been given. It's one of the major reasons why we have graduates that are not knowledgeable in their field.
