Week 363 | My Splinterlands Art Contest Entry | Oaken Behemoth

avatar

Hello! ✨

For this week, I chose Oaken Behemoth to draw in my art style! 😁

Super happy to see my art in the 1st spot! πŸ₯‡ 😁 One of my motivations to put effort into my art! Thanks so much, Splinterlands! ✨

Going back to the card, it reminds me of a character from the Ghibli movie called Princess Mononoke. Not entirely a character but an element, a possessed hog named Nago. The difference is that this character is in the form of wood.

"Many years ago on the banks of the River of Power, a huge boar was entangled with a Dark Eternal Warlock in a fight whose stakes were greater than life itself. The Warlock was attempting to harvest the beast's soul, but this giant boar would not be taken without a fight. Every blast of dark magic from the Warlock only drove the beast into a greater frenzy. With a mighty charge, the boar rammed an old oak tree that sat near the river's edge."

Art Process

  • sketch and line art

At first, I was hesitant to choose a card as it would be detailed because of the wood element. It can be done easily by using special brushes, but I would rather do it manually so that it would look organic. I looked for how wood texture would look like and also looked for hog sculptures. In that way, I have at least an idea of how to start the art. I then looked at a pose on Pinterest. I saw this hog running, and I thought it was a perfect pose, hehe. I used a blue pencil for the initial sketch. It was tricky to position the wood, but gladly I managed to do it. On the next frame is the line art. I used my usual go-to pen and then started tracing. I used a thicker line for the outline and a thinner one for the inside lines. I edited some details,l ike the twist of the tail, giving it a more organic pose.

  • base color and detailing

I used a color picker tool to copy the colors from the original card. The atmosphere would be dark, so I adjusted the value of the colors. I then used the bucket tool to color the spaces. I used an eraser edge for the colors beyond the lines. The most difficult part of the art process was the detailing. I drew some wood-textured characters before, and it was always a difficult task, haha. But I love the challenge! I started with some airbrush for the shadows and then used a cell brush for the hard shading. I started on the eyes and face ,and then I tried to match up with the body and limbs. I like how it turned out. After finishing the main subject, I started making the background. I used dark blue and brown for the sky and ground.

Final Art

The light would be against the subject, so I added some glows on the back part of the subject using the glow brush. And then added textured mask.

Tadaaa! I hope I imparted some knowledge through my art process! 😊 Feel free to ask anything in the comment section, and I will answer to the best of my skill!! πŸ₯³πŸ’•
