Week 360 | My Splinterlands Art Contest Entry | Onyx Sentinel
For this week, I chose Onyx Sentinel! ☺️
I hope everyone is doing fine.
By the way, I wonder what other artists listen to or watch when they are doing their art, hehe. I am just curious. ICoz I have seen a clip of an artist saying that he is happier and more in the mood doing art when he is listening to Beethoven or classical music. I might try, but I get bore,d and the spirit of sleepiness will get to me, haha! But if you ever read this, I want to know, haha!
"Long ago, a Dwarven king amassed enough onyx to create a single Golem, but his creation would not be controlled. It singlehandedly brought the Dwarf kingdom crashing down around itself, burying it in the ground for thousands of years. One day, long after the Splintering, a group of Kobold Miners accidentally freed the Sentinel. Their axes broke as they struck the beast’s stone body. "
More of Onyx Sentinel's lore here.
Art Process
- sketch and the lineart
For this week's entry, I wanted to give the card a twist. The card is an elemental in a crystal form. I wanted to turn this creature into a female human form. So, I went ahead to Pinterest to look for some inspo to start. I had to scroll down and pick some references. I often put them together, and from there, I will form something. So, I searched for a background ref, a crystal crown, and a simple pose. I first sketched the idea by using a blue pen. I then added another layer for the lineart. To make the face symmetrical, I used a special ruler. I used different layers for the crown and head so that later on, I can move them separately.
- base color and initial shading
I wanted different shades of purple and pink, and so, I just randomly picked the colors on the color wheel and applied them. Except for the eyes, the red really stood out. On the next frame, I started working on the crown. I wanted to make it glowy, and so I used a special brush for it. It was the same as the crystals on the lower part.
- applying the mask and working on the eyes
Here, I really made the scene dark. I added a abckground with a light t source on the right side. My idea for this was to put a dramatic light highlighting the right side. I used a blue color in multiply mode in a clipped layer. I wanted the eyes to stand out too, and so, I added some light and some crystal like eyes.
Final Art
On another clipped layer, I used a light purple color in the add glow mode for the light. Ahh, it was satisfying moment to put the lights on different points. Yeah, it took time to figured it out where should the light will go. I really loved the outcome of the broken shards. I used a blurring technique to show that those shards were moving. I added in front of the subject, too. Lastly, I added a texture detail.
Tadaaa! I hope I imparted some knowledge through my art process! 😊 Feel free to ask anything in the comment section, and I will answer to the best of my skill!! 🥳💕
