The Viscount Who Loved Me

I’m not one to go back to a series. It’s really never that deep or captivating enough to do that. But I did it once. I watched Mr. Queen, and I went back two times afterwards to rewatch the entire series. It’s still my best K-drama till date. Made me laugh the most, made me smile the most. I honestly am in my happiest state whenever I see that drama.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any series like that till this moment, so yeah, I could still say, in all generality, that re-watching a series is not my thing. But then, there’s the Bridgerton series, but not all of them. The focus is on Season 2.

Now, I saw the second season of Bridgerton just about the same time everyone else saw it. But there’s a reason I was particularly drawn to this series. You see, it still may not be known but the Bridgerton series came from a book series. Daphne and Simon’s story which was Season 1 was titled ‘The Duke and I,” and Kate and Anthony’s story was the next in the series which was titled, “The Viscount Who Loved Me.”

Every one of the Bridgerton siblings had their story, and in the six to eight books, or so, it was the most scintillating thing you’d ever read. I think the entire series was by Julia Quinn, if I’m not mistaken, and I love her to this day for this series that made my days in High school the joy that it was, at least when it comes to hobbies.

So, you can understand my most enthusiastic interest when I found out that there was to be a movie adaptation. You’ve heard it a million times, so I guess I do not need to say it, but I wouldn’t be a bibliophile if I didn’t say once more that the books are always better.

Yes, the movies add a lot of spice, and it’s great to see the live form of something you had only visualised in your mind, but sometimes, some stories remain refreshing when they stay in your imagination.

And this is how I feel for all of the seasons in the Bridgerton series, except one.

The story of Anthony and Kate.

I do not want to hear a word of how she was unfair to Edwina, or whatnot. For both our sakes, I hope people with such mindset do not exist on this platform. This is not the reason I’m spotlighting this particular season, so it’s away from the point. There is something that this season possessed that the others sorely lacked, no matter what you say.

And that is, the raw, unfiltered, absolutely swoon-worthy chemistry that Kate and Anthony had in the season. I do not know if anyone has ever felt goose bumps from a performance by a character in a movie, but the chemistry between these two made the hair on my skin, at several intervals, rise.

The tension was palpable. It’s impossible to think that these two did not have some form of romantic emotion for each other in real life. Alas, that’s not the case as Anthony, or rather Jonathan Bailey, is married to a man. How he was able to pull off that masterful demonstration in the series is a testament to his versatility and dexterity in acting.

It will always be the best season in the series to me because of Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley, who played Kate. They embodied their roles with such impeccable finesse, I have seen nothing like it dibce. Watching this season was a beautiful experience for me because I felt it deeply. The sparks, and the titillating emotions that enshroud the forbidden. The raw angst and tension that characterizes two people that adore themselves but cannot be together.

I loved the way I felt watching this, and if not for anything, the very fact that they made me smile hard in a love series, blush even, is enough for me to talk about it once more on this space.

So, yeah. That’s about it. I’m seeing another series I’d love to talk about, so look out for when I’m done with that one. If you’re Nigerian, and you know Kenzy Udosen, you would understand my reference when I say this series was a ten over ten across boards. You go! Whoever casted these lovely people together. You go!
