Splinterlands Social Media Challenge: Magic monsters are great in reverse speed with Obsidian

Splinterlands is a pretty complicated game with interesting battles with all the options available. This is a part of the weekly social media challenge for Splinterlands. This week is about a great fight where I won because of Obsidian.

Featured cards

Obsidian is an earth summoner that costs 4 mana, and it increases your monster's magic attack by 1. It's a good card to have because having a strong magic lineup can be avoid the armor on your opponent's team. It's hard to counter full magic teams if you are not prepared.

Rule set, Battle and Plan

rule set.png

The ruleset this time is Close Range, Holy Protection, and Reverse Speed. This means that ranged monsters can attack from up front, one damage attack is negated, and the attack order is reversed. There are also 29 mana available, and I can choose any splinter except for death.

Madcap Magus45thLifeleech and Scattershot
Djinn Biljka36thWeaken, Void, and Camouflage
Total Mana:28

I use Obsidian as my summoner for the +1 magic. Halfling Refugee because it only costs 1 mana, and I want something tanky up front with a low mana cost. Then I have 5 magic monsters afterward. Queen Mycelia has protect to give my team armor, and this will help my monsters survive against melee or ranged monsters. Goblin Psychic has tank heal and affliction to keep my tank alive. Madcap Magus has life leech and scattershot so its a bit of a gamble, but I think it can work out. Then I have Djinn Biljka in the last spot with weaken, void, and camouflage. All of the magic monsters have low speed, so they should be able to attack first in the ruleset.

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think that I have the advantage. My monsters have low speed, so they should attack first, and the summoners' abilities only hurt my opponent. The only issue is that taunt monster because my opponent also has two monsters with triage. I hope my Goblin Psychic lands an affliction to make it easier to finish that off.

Round 2

round 2.png
I got lucky, and my scattershot hit the taunt monster. So it was killed before any of the healers could get to it. At this point, I don't think there is anything my opponent can do against me with all the magic damage that I have.

conclusion.png
I ended up winning this match a few rounds later, as I expected. I only lost 1 monster, and my magic monsters made quick work of my opponent's monsters.

Conclusion

The battle this time played out how I wanted it to. Focusing on magic in a reverse speed match is quite powerful, and there was no death allowed in the Splinter choice. So it just felt like the best choice was to use magic. I got a bit lucky at the start, and that made the entire fight easy, but if I didn't get that lucky scattershot, I could have been in danger.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

I do the same, often obsidian with reverse speed since most mage monsters are slow

Yea. Magic monsters are slow, but they are powerful. Perfect for reverse speed.

So the healer can drag out a fight you should’ve won. Magic in reverse speed really is overpowered. I see how Obsidian makes it almost unfair

Yea. The magic monsters tend to be slow, so it works out quite well.

I've watched the battle twice trying to understand exactly how you survived 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I got lucky and killed off the taunt monster in 1 turn. My scattershot landed on that taunt monster, and there wasn't much my opponent could do after that first round.

hahaha I saw that.... After that round it was a hopeless case for your opponent

Sweet game. I think the opponent was trying to use that triage card at the back to do some heal, but you packed plenty magic attacks. Good win.

Yea. I was kind of lucky the first round, and those magic monsters can add up when combined with Obsidian.
