Splinterlands: Gargoya Devil is nice in Shades of Gray and Earthquake
Splinterlands is a complex game, and it allows for various cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various rulesets applied, and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle where I won because I used A'lan Musketeer.
Featured cards

Gargoya Devil is a neutral splinter that costs 7 mana. This splinter starts with the flying and close range ability. Leveling up this card only increases gives it the deathblow at level 4. This is a nice card to use, but it can only be used in Wild and Modern. I find that the two starting abilities makes it decent as a backup tank.
Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

The rulesets this time are Shades of Gray and Earthquake. This means that only neutral monsters can be used, and all non-flying monsters take 2 physical damage per turn. There is also 14 mana available, and I can use any splinter except for life.
This fight is interesting because we can only use neutral monsters, and with so little mana available, I have to be selective with my choices. The earthquake will also kill off anything that doesn't have flying.
| Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wizard of Eastwood | 3 | Summoner | -2 armor |
| Chaos Agent | 1 | 1st | Dodge |
| Venari Marksrat | 3 | 2nd | Martyr |
| Gargoya Devil | 7 | 3rd | Flying and Close Range |
| Total Mana: | 14 |
My summoner is Wizard of Eastwood for its -2 armor. My tank is Chaos Agent with dodge, and Venari Marksrat is my backup tank with Marytr. My last monster is Gargoya Devil
The focus of this lineup is to keep my Gargoya Devil alive as long as possible. My first few monsters won't last long, and one of them has martyr, which will buff my Gargoya Devil's stats by 1. It's a simple match due to the low mana.
Round 1

At first glance, I think that I have the advantage in this fight. My opponent has very low-health monsters, and that earthquake will wipe them out. My summoner removed his armor from his summoner, but my opponent is still faster than me.
Round 5

I am down to just one monster left, but my opponent still has 3. Two of them will die due to earthquake but it will also buff up his last monster. I still think I will win unless I miss too many attacks.

After a few more rounds, I won the match as I expected.
Conclusion
The battle this time went exactly how I planned it. I knew that flying monsters would be nice in this match, and combining it with martyr worked out well. I am glad that my summoner canceled out my opponent's armor. The options were limited, but the close range plus flying works out well. Towards the end, both me and my opponent and I were missing attacks, but the earthquake canceled out my opponent's heal.
You can see my entire match here.
What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.
