Significado de la festividad de los reyes magos [esp][eng]

En varios lugares del mundo hoy se celebra la festividad de los 3 reyes magos, siendo al mismo tiempo como el culmen de las celebraciones navideñas. No obstante, hay un par de cosas que aquí son importante aclarar, primero, referente a los reyes en sí mismo, en segundo lugar, respecto al sentido de esta celebración.
No eras tres, no eran reyes, no eran magos
A pesar de que en Colonia, Alemania, existe ciertamente el relicario donde reposan las restos de unos sabios venido de oriente y que llevaron unas ofrendas al niño de Belén, aquí lo importante es rescatar el simbolismo. En efecto, el hecho de decir que eran tres se basa en que esa fue la cantidad de ofrendas que le ofrecieron (Oro, incienso y mirra), y también que eran 3 los continentes conocidos entonces (Europa, Asia y África), como dando a entender que todo el mundo va en adoración al niño, dándole lo más preciado que poseen.
Tampoco eran reyes, la tradición de llamarlos así es para resaltar más el contraste de su aventura y escena, unos reyes se ponen en camino para encontrar a un niño que es el rey prometido desde antiguo por el Dios de Israel, el cumplimiento de las profecías, por eso le llevaron Oro (regalo para personas de la realeza) así como también incienso (ofrenda sólo dedicada a Dios) y mirra (indicando su humanidad).
El hecho de llamarles magos, tampoco es lo más acertado, ya que se trata de una mala traducción del texto hebreo. En realidad, se trataban de unos sabios, astrólogos, estudiosos de las estrellas lo más seguro, que se dieron cuenta que incluso en el firmamento había algo especial, lo siguieron por su afán de saber y se encontraron con una sorpresa mayor. La estrella no estaba indicando sólo un fenómeno más sino uno que marcaría la historia del mundo en su totalidad, un niño que dividiría la historia en dos, antes de su nacimiento y después del mismo.
Fiesta de la Epifanía
El nombre teologico de las celebraciones que circundan este día de reyes, en realidad es el de la Epifanía del Señor, ya que como indica la etimología de esta palabra se trata de la manifestación de algo grandioso, hoy sabemos que se trata de alguien maravilloso, el Mesías esperado desde hace tiempo por la humanidad.
Resalto los destinatarios de la promesa, la humanidad entera, de hecho éste es el profundo significado de los tradicionalmente conocidos como reyes magos, ellos representan a todo el mundo, más allá del pueblo israelita del Antiguo Testamento, ya que la salvación que trae el Niño Dios no se limita ni a un territorio ni a unas personas en específico, en realidad, no tiene fronteras, y su tierra es todo corazón dispuesto a recibirle, más allá de razas, condición social e incluso credos.
Esto último es muy interesante porque aún cuando existen diversos credos, de una u otra manera a todos ese niño y su vida posterior les dice algo. He aquí donde se fundamenta el posible diálogo del cristianismo con las diversas religiones. Incluso con los que no profesan ninguna sino que son sinceros buscadores de la Verdad, así como esos sabios que impulsados por este amor a ella también salieron de sus tierras a encontrarse con ella, descubriendo en su camino que no se trataba de una cosa sino de una persona, más aún de un niño, la manifestación (epifanía) más cercana y tierna de ella.

In many parts of the world, today is the celebration of the Three Wise Men, which is also the culmination of the Christmas celebrations. However, there are a couple of things that are important to clarify, first, regarding the kings themselves, and second, regarding the meaning of this celebration.**
They were not three, they were not kings, they were not magi
Although there is indeed a relic in Cologne, Germany, where the remains of some wise men from the East who brought offerings to the child of Bethlehem rest, the important thing here is to recover the symbolism. In fact, the fact of saying that they were three is based on the fact that that was the number of offerings they offered him (gold, frankincense, and myrrh), and also that there were 3 known continents at the time (Europe, Asia, and Africa), as if to imply that the whole world goes to worship the child, giving him the most precious thing they possess.
They were not kings either, the tradition of calling them so is to highlight the contrast of their adventure and scene, kings set out to find a child who is the king promised from ancient times by the God of Israel, the fulfillment of the prophecies, that is why they brought him gold (gift for people of royalty) as well as incense (offering only dedicated to God) and myrrh (indicating his humanity).
The fact of calling them magi is not the most accurate either, since it is a mistranslation of the Hebrew text. In reality, they were wise men, astrologers, scholars of the stars, most likely, who realized that even in the firmament there was something special, they followed it because of their desire to know and they found a bigger surprise. The star was not indicating just one more phenomenon but one that would mark the history of the world in its entirety, a child who would divide history into two, before his birth and after it.
The Feast of the Epiphany
The theological name of the celebrations that surround this Epiphany Day is actually that of the Epiphany of the Lord, since as the etymology of this word indicates, it is about the manifestation of something grandiose, today we know that it is about someone wonderful, the Messiah awaited for a long time by humanity.
I emphasize the recipients of the promise, the whole of humanity, in fact this is the profound meaning of the traditionally known as the Three Wise Men, they represent the whole world, beyond the people of Israel of the Old Testament, since the salvation that the Child God brings is not limited to a territory or to specific people, in reality, it has no borders, and its land is every heart willing to receive him, beyond races, social condition and even creeds.
This last point is very interesting because even though there are different creeds, in one way or another that child and his later life tells something to everyone. This is where the possible dialogue of Christianity with the various religions is based. Even with those who do not profess any but are sincere seekers of the Truth, like those wise men who, driven by this love for it, also left their lands to meet it, discovering on their way that it was not a thing but a person, even more so a child, the closest and most tender manifestation of it.
