Hello everyone! Great community of Movies and TV Shows, I hope you're all doing great, this time I want to share my review of: Ozark... I know, I know, maybe you've already seen it somewhere, or maybe you ignored it like I did for a long time... I remember seeing the thumbnail, Jason Bateman with his super serious face, and thinking: "Meh, another crime drama, I'll watch it later maybe." I saw some clips and everything looked depressing, and I honestly don't know if I was really looking forward to it, but I ended up watching it because a friend recommended it, and I think "depressing" falls VERY SHORTLY short of describing how intense it is, it became one of those series that draws you in very easily. So picture this: Jason Bateman plays Marty Byrde, this super-smart financial advisor from Chicago, a genius with numbers, well… but surprise, he doesn’t just manage legitimate business accounts… turns out one of his biggest clients is this HUGE, really scary Mexican cartel… and he’s like their Star Money Launderer™.

When the show kicks off, everything goes to hell in a spectacular way, but just like that, in the first episode… someone’s been stealing money from the cartel (bad idea!), and Marty basically has to save his own skin by using his gift of the gab, his desperate plan is that he can launder a ton more money for them, but he needs to move. Where? He sells the Ozark Lakes region of Missouri on the idea that it’s a hidden money-laundering goldmine: a tourist spot, full of cash-based businesses. The cartel gives him a super-short, scary deadline and basically says, “Okay, go for it. Make it work, or you know what happens.” So, boom! Marty grabs his wife, Wendy (played by the AWESOME Laura Linney), and his two teenage kids, Charlotte and Jonah, and takes them from their comfortable life in Chicago to this… well, let’s just say the Ozarks in the show aren’t your typical vacation spot and pretty picture-taking place. It kind of has a vibe that runs throughout… yeah, visually it’s quite gray, very dark, even kind of eerie at times. I read somewhere that they called it the "redneck coast" or the "redneck riviera," and the truth is, it fits perfectly with the vibe the series portrays; it feels isolated, somewhat rustic, full of secrets... which, of course, is perfect for hiding shady business, but that also brings its own problems.

Gran comunidad de Movies and TV Shows, espero que estén genial, en esta ocasion les quiero compartir mi reseña de: Ozark.. ya sé, ya sé, tal vez ya la vieron por ahí, o quizás la ignoraron como yo por un montón de tiempo.. me acuerdo de ver la miniatura, Jason Bateman con su cara súper seria, y pensar: "Meh, otro drama de crímenes, después la veo si acaso". Veía algunos clips y todo se veía deprimente, y la verdad no sé si tenía muchas ganas, pero acabe viéndola por la recomendación de un amigo, y pienso "deprimente" se queda CORTÍSIMO para describir lo intensa que es, se volvió de esas series de las que te atrapan muy fácilmente. Así que, imagínense esto: Jason Bateman hace de Marty Byrde, es este asesor financiero de Chicago súper inteligente, un crack para los números, pues.. pero sorpresa, no solo maneja cuentas de negocios legales.. resulta que uno de sus clientes más grandes es un cártel mexicano GIGANTE y que da miedo... pero miedo en serio.. y él es como su Lavador de Dinero Estrella™.

Cuando arranca la serie, todo se va al carajo de forma espectacular, pero así, ¡rapidito!, en el primer episodio.. alguien le estuvo robando dinero al cártel (¡pésima idea!), y Marty básicamente tiene que salvar su propio pellejo usando la labia, su plan desesperado es que él puede lavarles muchísima más plata, pero necesita mudarse. ¿A dónde? A la región de los lagos de Ozark, en Misuri, les vende la idea de que es una mina de oro escondida para lavar dinero: un lugar turístico, lleno de negocios que manejan puro efectivo.. el cártel le da un plazo súper corto, que da miedo, y básicamente le dicen: "Ok, ándale pues. Haz que funcione, o ya sabes qué pasa". Así que, ¡pum! Marty agarra a su esposa, Wendy (interpretada por la GENIAL Laura Linney), a sus dos hijos adolescentes, Charlotte y Jonah, y se los lleva de su vida cómoda en Chicago a este... bueno, digamos que los Ozarks de la serie no son el típico lugar para ir de vacaciones y sacar fotos bonitas.. tiene como una vibra que se siente en todo... sí, visualmente es bastante gris, muy oscura, a veces hasta medio tétrica. Por ahí leí en algún lado que le decían la "costa redneck" o la "riviera redneck", y la verdad, le pega perfecto a la onda que muestra la serie, se siente aislado, medio rústico, lleno de secretos... que claro, resulta perfecto para esconder negocios turbios, pero eso también trae sus propios problemas.

I’ll be honest, when I started watching it I wasn’t entirely sure... a friend told me Marty seemed too cold, almost robotic... and yes, Bateman plays it super calm, he’s incredibly calculating, he almost never shows emotion, not even when he’s got a gun pointed at him or everything’s going to hell, but the thing is that you quickly realize that’s his superpower, which is why he’s still alive. The guy has balls of steel... he has to be cold, logical, think five steps ahead, because any emotional mistake could cost him and his family their lives, he’s a numbers guy immersed in a world of brutal violence, and his ability to stay calm and find ways out under brutal pressure is what makes him interesting, not boring. That’s why Bateman’s very contained performance makes perfect sense... it’s not that he can’t act, it’s that Marty can’t show weakness! AND THEN there’s Wendy, Laura Linney is simply brutal!

When the series begins, their marriage is already half-broken, almost divorced... they find themselves thrust into this impossible situation together, and her evolution... how crazy! She goes from being the partner who didn't want to know anything, maybe even a victim of the whole thing, and she keeps changing season after season until she becomes a power machine. Seriously, I swear, in the later seasons, she pulls the strings as much or more than Marty... many described her as the "perfect villain" or something like that, and wow! It suits her. She throws herself into power, strategy, the game. It scares you and fascinates you at the same time to see how she changes... you see how that ambition ignites, and she becomes tough, really tough. The dynamic between those two, Marty and Wendy, their relationship, that team that keeps breaking up and getting back together, built on the need to survive and the secrets they share... that's the heart of the show... you see them go through the worst of it, say horrible things to each other, things that would destroy any marriage, but somehow, they're still in it together, it's really twisted, but there's like a super weird loyalty there in the middle of all the chaos.

Les soy sincero, cuando empecé a verla como que no estaba muy seguro.. un amigo me dijo que Marty parecía demasiado frío, casi como un robot.. y sí, Bateman lo actúa súper calmado, es increíblemente calculador, casi nunca muestra emociones, ni aunque le estén apuntando con una pistola o todo se esté yendo al carajo, pero la onda es que rapidito te das cuenta de que ese es su superpoder, por eso sigue vivo. El tipo tiene unos huevos de acero.. tiene que ser frío, lógico, pensar cinco pasos adelante, porque cualquier error emocional podría costarle la vida a él y a su familia, es un tipo de números metido en un mundo de violencia bien cruda, y esa habilidad que tiene para mantener la calma y buscar salidas bajo una presión brutal es lo que lo hace interesante, no aburrido. Por eso la actuación tan contenida de Bateman tiene todo el sentido.. no es que no sepa actuar, es que Marty no puede mostrar debilidad! Y LUEGO está Wendy, Laura Linney está sencillamente ¡brutal!

Cuando empieza la serie, su matrimonio ya estaba medio fregado, o sea, casi divorciándose.. se ven metidos juntos en esta situación imposible, y su evolución… ¡qué locura! Pasa de ser como la socia que no quería saber nada, tal vez hasta una víctima de todo el rollo, y va cambiando temporada tras temporada hasta volverse una máquina de poder, en serio, les juro, en las últimas temporadas, ella mueve los hilos tanto o más que Marty.. muchos la describían como la "villana perfecta" o algo así, y ¡uf!, le queda. Se mete de lleno en el poder, la estrategia, el juego, te da miedo y te fascina al mismo tiempo ver cómo cambia.. ves cómo se le prende esa ambición, y se vuelve dura, pero dura de verdad. La dinámica entre ellos dos, Marty y Wendy, esa relación de ellos, ese equipo que se rompe y se vuelve a armar a cada rato, construido sobre la necesidad de sobrevivir y los secretos que comparten... eso es el corazón de la serie.. los ves pasar por las peores, decirse cosas horribles, cosas que destruirían cualquier matrimonio, pero de alguna forma, siguen juntos en esto, es bien retorcido, pero hay como una lealtad súper rara ahí en medio de todo el caos.

Now we HAVE TO talk about Ruth Langmore, played by Julia Garner, who I really loved. Ruth is one of the local people that the Byrdes run into right away. She comes from a local family, really tough, low-income, who live in those trailer homes, you know, getting into little trouble, petty thefts and all that. She’s super smart, but really foul-mouthed – seriously, she swears like there’s no tomorrow. I know some people might not like it, but it feels super real to her – and she has tremendous ambition, ugh! She starts working for Marty, seeing it as her ticket out of that hole, out of that life that’s going nowhere. But Ruth doesn’t stay a supporting actor for long, not at all!

How she changes is one of the best things about the series, watching her grow, learning how the business works, making her own plans and having her own goals, and how she handles those complicated loyalties she has... wow!, it's simply incredible... a super complex character: you support her, it drives you crazy, you suffer for her, Julia Garner deserved every award she got for this, every single one! The series is not like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos in the sense that it hardly has that dark humor, while in those other series there were moments when you could laugh a little despite the darkness, Ozark almost never gives you a break... it works on pure tension, tension like that... raw, that doesn't let go, that leaves you with a knot in your stomach.

You're on edge the whole time... every episode brings in new threats, new arguments: other rival drug dealers (like the terrifying Darlene Snell, another local with her own gruesome plans), the cartel breathing down their necks, the FBI poking its nose in later, family drama exploding at the worst possible moments... you're always waiting to see when the next bomb drops, wondering how the hell the Byrdes are going to get out of this new mess. Yes, it stresses you out, but in that addictive way where you say 'I need to see what happens next!'... the truth is, it maybe takes about three or four chapters to put all the pieces together and really grab you, but once it does... forget about sleep!

Ahora SÍ O SÍ tenemos que hablar de Ruth Langmore, la hace Julia Garner, que de verdad, me encantó, Ruth es una de la gente local con la que los Byrde se topan casi enseguida, viene de una familia de ahí, bien dura, de bajos recursos, que viven en esas casas rodantes, ¿saben?, metidos en problemitas, robos chiquitos y eso, es súper inteligente, pero bien malhablada – en serio, dice groserías como si no hubiera mañana, ya sé que a algunos chance no les guste, pero se siente súper real para ella – y tiene una ambición ¡uff!, tremenda.. empieza a trabajar para Marty, viéndolo como su boleto para salir de ese hoyo, de esa vida que no va pa' ningún lado, pero Ruth no se queda de segundona por mucho tiempo, ¡para nada!

Cómo va cambiando ella es de lo mejor de la serie, verla crecer, aprender cómo se mueve el negocio, armar sus propios planes y tener sus propias metas, y cómo maneja esas lealtades complicadas que tiene... ¡wow!, es simplemente increíble.. un personaje súper complejo: la apoyas, te desespera, sufres por ella, Julia Garner se mereció cada premio que le dieron por esto, ¡cada uno! La serie no es como Breaking Bad o Los Soprano en el sentido de que casi no tiene ese humor negro, mientras que en esas otras series había momentos en que te podías reír un poquito a pesar de lo oscuro, Ozark casi nunca te da un respiro.. funciona a pura tensión, tensión así... cruda, que no te suelta, que te deja con un nudo en el estómago.

Estás todo el tiempo con los nervios de punta.. en cada capítulo meten nuevas amenazas, nuevas broncas: otros narcos rivales (como la Darlene Snell, que da miedo, otra de ahí del pueblo con sus propios planes macabros), el cártel respirándoles en la nuca, el FBI que después llega a meter su nariz, el drama de la familia explotando en los peores momentos.. siempre estás esperando a ver cuándo cae la siguiente bomba, preguntándote cómo diablos van a salir los Byrde de este nuevo problemón. Sí, te estresa, pero de esa forma adictiva que dices '¡necesito ver qué pasa ahora!'.. la verdad, tal vez tarda unos tres o cuatro capítulos en acomodar todas las piezas y en atraparte de verdad, pero una vez que te agarra... ¡olvídate de dormir!

The truth is, you end up so involved that you want to see if these people, who are basically criminals, somehow get away with it, and that's a really weird feeling. You end up rooting for the "bad guys," or well, these super imperfect and desperate characters... Visually, wow, it looks incredible. Beyond that dark vibe, the photography has a very particular look, that blue-green-gray color filter that is super, super Ozark-like... It gives it its personal touch, you know, its own style. The production quality feels really high the whole time. I loved one little detail they did: at the beginning of each episode, instead of a really long intro, they put in a short, super well-done image with four little drawings inside an 'O', which give you clues about important things that are going to happen in that episode... It's something small, but it's great, it makes you pay more attention.

Honestly, how they develop the characters in general is wow!, next level... even in the first two seasons, you see how they change and grow a lot, not only the main family, but also the other characters, you never feel like things stagnate... the story gets more and more intense, the stakes rise and rise, especially when you get to the third and fourth seasons, where politics and the FBI get more involved. It gets darker, more complicated, and Wendy's power... ugh!, it just keeps growing. So yeah, those doubts I had at the beginning? They're completely gone! This series exceeded EVERYTHING I expected, it's intelligent, it has brutal performances! Visually, it has its own unique vibe, and it handles suspense like few series I've seen... it's hard to watch, that's true, I'm not going to lie, it touches on themes of violence, drug dealers, how people rot morally, broken families... it's not afraid to show the ugly. But it grabs you in a way... ugh! If I had to give it a rating... Honestly, I'd easily give it a 9/10... it's that good, it's easily one of the best things Netflix has released, so, seriously, if you haven't seen it, what are you doing!? Give those first few episodes a chance to let it take off, and I promise you'll be glued... and well, that's all for today, take care of yourselves, bye!

La verdad, te terminas metiendo tanto que quieres ver si esta gente, que son básicamente criminales, de alguna forma se salen con la suya, y eso es una sensación bien rara, terminas apoyando a los "malos", o bueno, a estos personajes súper imperfectos y desesperados.. visualmente, ¡uf!, se ve increíble. Más allá de esa onda oscura, la fotografía tiene como un look muy particular, ese filtro de color medio azul-verde-gris que es súper, súper de Ozark.. le da su toque personal, ¿saben?, su propio estilo, la calidad de la producción se siente altísima todo el tiempo.. me encantó un detallito que hacen: al principio de cada capítulo, en vez de una intro larguísima, ponen una imagen corta, súper bien hecha, con cuatro dibujitos dentro de una 'O', que te dan pistas de cosas importantes que van a pasar en ese episodio.. es algo chiquito, pero está genial, te hace poner más atención.

La verdad, cómo desarrollan a los personajes en general es ¡wow!, de otro nivel.. incluso en las primeras dos temporadas, ves cómo cambian y crecen un montón, no solo la familia principal, sino también los demás personajes, nunca se siente que la cosa se estanque.. la historia se pone cada vez más intensa, el riesgo sube y sube, sobre todo cuando llegas a la tercera y cuarta temporada, donde ya se mete más la política y el FBI. Se pone más oscura, más complicada, y el poder de Wendy... ¡uff!, no para de crecer. Así que sí, ¿esas dudas que tenía al principio? ¡Ya desaparecieron por completo! Esta serie superó TODO lo que esperaba, es inteligente, tiene actuaciones ¡brutales!, visualmente tiene su onda única y maneja el suspenso como pocas series que he visto.. es fuerte de ver, eso sí, no les voy a mentir, toca temas de violencia, narcos, de cómo la gente se va pudriendo moralmente, de familias rotas... no le tiene miedo a mostrar lo feo. Pero te atrapa de una manera... ¡uff! Si tuviera que darle una calificación... La verdad, fácil le doy un 9/10.. así de buena es, fácil es de las mejores cosas que ha sacado Netflix, así que, en serio, si no la han visto, ¿¡qué están haciendo!? Denle chance a esos primeros capítulos para que agarre vuelo, y les prometo que se van a quedar pegados...y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, cuidense mucho, byebye!
