What an interesting review! I love how you highlight Marbot's honesty as opposed to other more...shall we say, embellished accounts of the period. The anecdote of Lannes dying in his arms sounds harsh, but it gives it that raw humanity that is sometimes missing in military memoirs.

Thank you ! Yep, some of the memoirs I've read were written very much with an agenda in mind, either as self-promotion for officers going into politics, or to clear their names for those who had been in politics and wanted to retire with the "right" kind of legacy.
