The good old days

"Baby, what would you like for dinner?" Jack's wife asked over the phone.

"You, of course." Jack teased, and Veronica laughed out.

"You play too much, babe. Would you like to a hot peppered jellof rice?" Veronica asked, still laughing.

"How about a hot peppered you?" Jack teased again.

"You know what, forget I even asked. I'll just make anything that comes to mind, and you just have to focus on driving home safely." His wife said and ended the call.

She smiled to herself, feeling lucky to have married the man of her dreams. The two were inseparable, and they loved each other to the bones, but all of these was in the past; in the time before Jack made the mistake that ruined everything. Now, all he does is reminisce on the good old days, and wish things could go back to how they were.

Jack drove home from work, feeling very tired and hungry. He opened the door and walked into the house. His eyes hit the dining table, but it was empty, and there was no sound coming from the kitchen. He walked up the stairs and dropped his suitcase in his room, then he walked to the guest room that Veronica had chosen to sleep in since he disappointed her. He knocked, but she didn't respond, so he called out to her.

"Babe, are you okay?" James asked, but he got no response. "I was wondering if there's something I can eat for dinner, or if you could fix me something for dinner." James called out again.

"Go tell your baby mama to fix you dinner. I'm about to sleep, so please get away from the door and stop disrupting my peace." Veronica warned sternly.

James sighed, and walked back to the kitchen. He checked the refrigerator, and saw that there was nothing he could fix. He resulted to drinking to bed, feeling worse than he had always felt since Veronica's attitude changed towards him. He remembered how they used to be before he got too drunk during a party, and ended up getting a random girl pregnant.

It was a bright sunny Sunday afternoon. Veronica had just served Jack his best hot peppered jellof rice with lots of meat, and she watched him devour it, singing her praises as he did so.

"Baby, I don't know what I did to deserve you, but you're the best thing that has ever happened to me. I'm so happy I have you in my life." Jack complimented, and Veronica smiled at him.

There was a knock on the door, and Veronica went to get it. A young girl walked in, all dolled up. Immediately Jack saw her, he coughed violently, and Veronica ran to him to give him water.

"Young lady, who are you? And why are you staring at my husband that way?" Veronica asked the visitor.

"My bad. I had no idea that he was married when he was busy getting me pregnant." The girl blurted out, and Jack chocked on his food. He spat out the food in his mouth, and with eyes widely open, he stared at his wife, who turned back to stare at him.

"Jack, what is she talking about?" Veronica asked.

"I don't know... she's not supposed to be pregnant... it was a one time mistake, and I was drunk." Jack stumbled on his words.

"When did this happen?" Veronica asked.

"A week before our wedding." Jack replied with almost a whisper.

Veronica turned back to me the girl, she looked at her tummy, and the pregnancy was already visible. She couldn't believe her eyes. She and Jack had only been married for seven months, and all these time, she felt joyful about her marriage. She left the dining room and went into the bedroom, leaving her husband and his soon to be baby mama.

Since that day, things had never been the same for them. Veronica didn't want to leave the marriage because she worried about what people would say, so instead of leaving, she took her things to the guest room and her attitude towards Jack changed. She no longer cared for him the way she used to, and she only cooked for him whenever she felt like.
Jack was heartbroken. He tried begging her in all the ways he could think of, but it wasn't working.

Now, home felt strange to him. It felt empty even though it was not, and food felt like sand in his mouth without his wife.
Jack wondered if things would ever go back to how they were, in the time before his mistakes caught up with him and shattered his once a happy home.

Sharing a deep love and watching it fall apart is deeply sad. it's heartbreaking to live in endless regret and nostalgia. A beautiful piece of writing, my blessings

Some mistakes are unfixable. You only live with the consequences. I pity dear veronica

From your story, I can say trust can be earned and trust be broken. It's not a gift. For Veronica to trust Jack again, he has to work for it.

But then, getting another woman pregnant? What kind of costly mistake is that?

I'm curious, though. Who's James? Or is it Jack's second name?

That must've been a mistake on my path. It's supposed to be Jack, so we can say that James is a second name.
And you're right, earning Veronica's trust again would be really hard to do.
Thanks for reading 😊

Getting another woman pregnant is a big pain to Veronica oh. If I’m her, I won’t ever believe Jack anymore
