Addiction, a sole product of one's choices

‎Hello everyone, I welcome you to my blog.

‎This is another interesting prompt to speak on. Is addiction a choice, or a disease?
‎Now, before we say anything, it's important to note what type of addiction one has. Though, to me, addiction is addiction. It doesn't matter whether it is alcohol addiction, drug addiction, movie addiction, or whatever kind of addiction one may have. As long as the word "addiction" is involved, they all mean the same thing.
‎The inability to live without something, or the feeling that one has to depend on something for either happiness, or whatever. Whatever form it may take, addiction has just one explanation.

‎So many people claim that addiction is incurable, because no matter how hard they try, they always go back to what they were addicted to. And thus, they've pegged addiction to be a disease. Well, we might not hastily debunk these claims because addiction can be hard to get over. It's just the same with obsession. Once a person is obsessed with anything, he goes miles to get it. And from my observation, I think addiction begins with obsession.
‎At first, they are obsessed with whatever it may be, and once they get it, they become addicted_never to let go again.

‎I on the other hand, I do not entirely agree that one can not let go of his addictions, thus making it seem like a disease.
‎If we called addiction a disease, that would mean that we are saying that nobody can escape this lifestyle. But there are people who have done that. If we called it a disease, it would mean that we believe the saying that, "Once an addict, always an addict", and this isn't true. There are many people out there who have overcome this problem, and they are very much alive to tell their stories. All it took was the decision to change, and the determination to pull through with all the struggles accompanied with that tough decision.

‎Let's take drugs for an example. I believe that nobody would congest a drug with the intentions of becoming addicted to it. For some people, they simply felt it was what they needed at the moment. Some did drugs because their friends convinced them to try it out. And to some, it all began as a fun story.
‎None of these people dreamed to become an addict for the first time. But somehow, they lost control of themselves, and lost track of what was right or wrong, and this led to their addiction.

‎They suddenly begin to feel that happiness comes from being high, and nothing else seem to matter to them anymore.
‎But despite all these, the reason I refuse to see addiction as a disease is because, these individuals actually had a choice to stop, and retrace their steps. We all know what attachment feels like. That moment when we begin to feel like we can't live without something or someone. That moment when these people begin to feel too comfortable with the drugs, they could've stopped then. They could've sought for help, done therapy, or even rehabilitation. They could've cut off the friends that were influencing them.
‎Honestly, there are dozens of ways that such a person could've gotten rid of that feeling before it became their reality. But he chose the drugs to become his source of happiness, even when there are a ton of other things that could keep a person happy.

‎People make excuses and call addiction a disease because when they try to change, it's often hard, and they end up returning to their old ways. But there are still people who made that tough decision, and they fought to see that they got out of it.
‎If their liberation isn't a product of their decision, then what is?

‎We need to stop indulging the belief that an addict can not change. We need to stop seeing addiction as an incurable disease. It is not.
‎The truth is; just as nothing comes easy, once a person takes the bold step of choosing to do better, you'd have to fight your demons until you achieve your purpose. And it is not by some miracle. It is because you have chosen to do whatever it takes to live a better life.

‎Don't make excuses. Decide, and work towards making that decision a reality. Choose yourself over that addiction.
