The Surprise Birthday Party

It wasn't my idea but my mum's idea. We all celebrate birthdays each year at home but we never thought of the person that always makes our birthdays celebration happen.

The person behind the spending making sure there is cake to cut, candle light to blow off, wishes to be made and drinks and goodies to be shared.

It was a shared moment everyone anticipated for and my Dad never fails to give us that moment we shared together. For me it was a memorable one. I can't easily get it off my head but smile whenever I remember.

It all started some few months ago when my mum suggested throwing a surprise birthday party for my Dad. It was a nice and unique idea which had never happened before. The plans progressed and everyone had something to offer including my siblings who weren't around at the moment. Their gifts were received a day before D-Day.

I was anxious. I wanted to know the turn up of the event. My father had no idea of the surprise birthday patch. That morning he received several gifts that brought so much smiles to his face. I can remember I saw a genuine smile on his face, that day was a day filled with so much happiness for him. I could relate and feel it too. I could also remember him calling me that morning and telling me about the beautiful gifts he received. He was like “this birthday is working o” I laughed though I'm yet to present my own gift.

Then during the preparation for food, I could remember my father asking my mother why she was preparing a large quantity of food and my mother had to lie to cover up so he wouldn't know. We invited a few of his friends to come. Had his best friend carry him out of the house giving us room to decorate and set the place in a party mood. The moment he walked through the gate everyone chorused a happy birthday at the same time together with his friends. My Dad laughed so much and it brought tears to my eyes. I never saw him that happy to that extent. It was an emotional moment and I'm sure he was surprised to see his friends who came from far states to grace the occasion.

There was food, music and moments of discussion among his friends and I could remember him announcing every gift he got from us with so much pride in his voice. He danced but my Dad can't dance so we'll save a soul. His dancing steps are always funny. We cut the cake and read some letters to him. I just can't get the memories out of my head. The little moment we shared together was a memorable one.

It was something we haven't done before and I was celebrating him and I wish each year always turns out to be that way. Surprise birthday went so well and the birthday Papa got surprised too.
