Special Education and Special Moments: A 5-Day Training at Manuel’s Resort

I recently had an incredible opportunity to join a 5-day regional training on Special Education Content and Pedagogy, held at the picturesque Manuel's Resort.

I, along with the passionate educators across the region, embarked on the journey of learning, reflection, and growth. The training not only deepened my understanding of SPED but also reminded me of the vital role we play in creating inclusive and supportive learning settings for all students.

I arrived early at the venue on the first day of the 5-day training. It was my first time checking in at Manuel's Resort. I was excited about my expectations, though I didn't have a concrete idea of what would happen during those days of training. All I knew was that it would be about SPED, which always captured my interest since I have my son who belongs to this group of learners.

The venue is really hard to describe. All I could remember was that I was mesmerized by the things I saw inside the resort. It is so beautiful and very huge, with several swimming pools, beautiful landscapes, full of awesome figures, huge halls, and convention centers. Madagascar was there too, nestled on one side of the area, the chipmunks and the Disney princesses, and a lot more.

Day 1 of the training focused on the basics of SPED. It began with the roll call of participants from different divisions, followed by check-in at the hotel rooms, and the grouping of participants to promote more interactive discussions for the entire duration of the training. Foods were served generously every time, and I began to make new friends in the group I belonged to.

From Day 1 to Day 4, I was filled with so much learning, so reflection, and I know I have grown in my career field. I learned the basics of Braille Reading. I really had fun with the Braille Reading experience. I was amazed by how these blind learners learn Braille. It was hard, it needs grasping activated to 100 percent sensitivity, and a lot of brain to memorize all those dot codes.

I also learn some basics of Sign Language for our deaf learners, and it was more awesome than anything in the special education. It was hard, too, but I remembered how my heart jumped for joy when I read a sentence or two using sign language. That was so satisfying! We had an activity in which we had to translate a song into sign language song and that experience inspires me to be more, to do more.

I also made new friends, they were all amazing and very dedicated to SPED. They shared best practices and day-to-day experiences inside the classroom that were very inspiring and incredible. And it burns a fire in my heart to be more passionate about our children with special needs. Giving them the best accommodations and support because they are different and it makes them more beautiful.

On the last day, a few more sessions and workshops took place, and in the afternoon, we had the awarding of certificates and a lot of photo opportunities. We had the closing program, and some participants left for home while others went swimming in the resort in the late afternoon.

Looking back on my 5-day SPED training at Manuel’s Resort, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with fellow educators who share the same passion for making a difference in the lives of children with special needs.

The experience not only deepened my knowledge and skills but also strengthened my commitment to provide the best support for these learners, including my own son. Surrounded by a beautiful place and wonderful people, I left the training inspired and motivated, ready to apply what I’ve learned and continue the journey of advocacy and inclusion. Truly, this training was more than just a professional development activity; it was a heartfelt reminder of why I chose this path in education.
