Red skies at night — sailor’s delight: January 16 2025
Have you ever heard that expression? We used to say it as children, believing the color of the sky at morning and night was a true indication of the weather. It was said that sailors loved red skies over the sea at night, but “red skies at morning? Sailors take warning!”
My husband and I went out for a walk toward the end of the day. We left early enough to enjoy the last rays of the sun in a pink tinged sky as we strolled around our neighborhood. And then, as we walked, the colors of the sky intensified.
It was thrilling to be outside, because the temperature was just below freezing, which is quite comfortable for us in the winter time, as long as we have the appropriate clothing on.
For the last four or five days, the temperatures have been below zero, with an occasional fierce wind. So the pleasant temperature was spectacular. And of course, we had wonderful views to go with it.
As you can see from the first picture, we have a healthy deer population in our neighborhood. They are very funny. They stare at us as we walk by, hoping we’re not a threat and will make no sudden moves. When I stop to take a picture, they get very skittish and worried, and often scamper away.
There is so much wrong in the world, that at times it feels like it might suck us all into its terrible vortex. But then, perhaps you have a day like I did, and it restores something. I worked hard, went walking under a burnt tangerine sky with my husband, and then went home and made a delicious dinner. And I could feel nothing but present, grateful, and happy.

So well said, @wesphilbin. It's all about connection... to ourselves, to each other, to the planet, and the wonders around us. I'm trying to find joy every day in the small things. 🥰
You have described the story very impressively, both about the sky and about animals like deer. @jayna
Unfortunately, there is no snow at my house.☃️
Snow is fickle, @sunisa. Even those of us who live in snowy environments may or may not get the snow we hope for these days. Thanks you for stopping by!
Me too, thank you.
Sounds like a peaceful beautiful evening walk with the hubby!😍
Nice to see the red sky at night, good weather to come for you guys tomorrow!
I have always followed this old sailor story, usually spot on!👍
The weather has indeed been gorgeous since the red skies predicted it. But... the temperatures are in the single digits! You win some, you lose some I guess, @silvertop!
You learn to adapt to the colder temperatures…😊
In Gunnison, Colorado, we would see weeks at a time with -25 below at night, and a high of zero. Back there it was normal, in the northwest no one could handle these types of temperatures!🙄
