Javeson's New Wave Extravaganza, 2nd Edition!

avatar

It's been awhile since I've had some free time to put together another music post. I hope you are all having a great start to your new week. So far, so good for me as well. Crossing my fingers it stays that way! Today I have a few minutes to get a new post put together, so here we go with another edition of Javeson's New Wave Extravaganza.

I've always been a fan of New Wave music from the late 1970's and early 1980's. It's still used extensively in movies even today and is stated by modern artists as a major influence in their musical style. Last time I posted @seckorama had a couple requests so I'll be sure to add them in today!

Spandau Ballet

First off I'll go with Spandau Ballet, a band from London, England that formed in 1979. They quickly became the leaders of the New Romantic movement in the English musical scene. Their third album True made them international superstars with the leading track "True", on of the best songs on the New Wave era. They also pay tribute to Marvin Gaye in the song, as he was a major influence on some of their song writing. Here's "True":

Simple Minds

Formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1977, an area @tengolotodo might know a bit about! They initially had fairly poor album sales. That all changed around the mid 1980's with the album Sparkle in the Rain followed by Once Upon a Time in 1985. There were multiple mega hits off that album including one included in the film "The Breakfast Club", this song is "Don't You (Forget About Me)":

The Cars

Formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976, this band quickly gained attention as one of the best new bands by 1978 in Rolling Stone. They didn't have a single front man, but Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr split the lead vocals giving the band a unique quality. Their album Candy-O gained them a huge following with the hit "Let's Go". Then came Shake It Up and then their biggest album Heartbeat city with hits like "Drive" which was interesting because it featured model Paulina Porizkova who later went on to marry Ric Ocasek. It also had the big hit "You Might Think" which is one of my favorites:

And just for fun here's "Drive" so you can see just how good looking Paulina was back in 1984. No wonder she became one of the most popular supermodels in the world!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions in the space provided below. These were fun to pick out and I had a good time! I hope you enjoy them as well. Please feel free to request any bands you might like me to feature in coming weeks. Happy Monday everyone!

Great music and for years I only listened to Simple Minds because Chrissie Hynde was married to the lead singer Jim Kerr. Him and another band member are massive Celtic fans. I am a massive Rangers fan, to say we cannot stand each other, is to put it very mildly considering the troubles in Northern Ireland were still rampant at the time!

Great tunes though!

Too bad Chrissie dumped him, but there had to be a reason, probably not football related! lol
