Book Review: The Murderbot Diaries | All Systems Red by Martha Wells
Murderbot is all the rage these days. Apple TV+ has been screening the first season of one of American writer Martha Wells' most lauded science fiction series since May 16. At the time of writing, four chapters of the ten have been screened on the popular streaming platform. So, suppose you like stories about cyborgs, space exploration, high technology, conspiracies of unscrupulous megacorporations, to name a few aspects that it treats with amusing sarcasm. In that case, perhaps, you will love this series.
But, as I usually make clear, we are here to comment on books, and certainly, as far as I know, from the reviews on the interwebs, this seems to be an excellent adaptation of the first novel that started the series, and which spans six novelettes and a short story. By the way, The Murderbot Diaries: All Systems Red, published on May 2, 2017, earned her (the author) the Alex, Hugo, Locus and Nebula awards; and she also narrowly took, the Philip K. Dick, in the short novel section. More than enough reason to justify the film production.
You know, it was a lot of fun to read the almost one hundred and fifty pages in one afternoon, lying on the comfortable sofa, while waiting without anguish for the reconnection of the electric service. This power failure lasted about eight hours, and I think it took me about four hours to enjoy the novel.
Don't expect me to tell you in detail what the novel is about. Suffice it to say that the story is told from the perspective of a humanoid hybrid being (a mixture of synthetic material and cloned biological material) whose purpose is to serve as a security guard assigned by an insurance company to protect humans from missions of exploration and exploitation of planets for mining and scientific purposes. The problem, if you can call it that, is that this security unit is more than an Android or robot. He has hacked his programming to bypass the control module and exercise, in the hidden, the agency, while fulfilling the functions for which it was designed.

Yes, I know! Fictions with androids, cyborgs, hybrids, killer synthetics, and others abound in literature. I remember the artificial copy of the beautiful protagonist in Fritz Lang's Metropolis, or Asimov's benevolent Bicentennial Man, and how can we forget the insensitive exterminator in James Cameron's first film, played by the strong Arnold, and his iconic phrase: “I'll be back! However, I assure you that Ms. Wells' unpretentious stylistic prose will grip you with a fresh, funny narrative and deep insights into identity, into what it means to be human. Beyond the gimmicks and quasi-laughable action, in a future where humanity, despite mastering wormhole technology, persists in ancestral behaviors that are at odds with moral and ethical principles. I understand then why Murderbot, although he enjoys the entertainment and the culture of man, is uncomfortable to develop among people, and does not aspire to become one of them, with full rights, or to go unnoticed (or confused) among transhumans in his purpose of emancipation!
In that sense, as a science fiction lover, I recommend reading this book. The rest of the books in the saga? I can't give my opinion at the moment, but I'm considering adding them to my reading list, poor me! I'll have to find a gap between my passions and responsibilities.
As for the translator (Carla Bataller Estruch) into Spanish of the version I found in the digital morass, I will say that she masters her trade very well. She even has a website where she presents her translation portfolio, which spans almost a decade.
For the time being, I wish you to continue your journey through the infinite seas of imagination, immersed in literature.

Matabot está de moda en estos días. Sí, Apple TV + viene proyectando desde el 16 de mayo la primera temporada de una de las series de ciencia ficción más laureadas de la escritora norteamericana Martha Wells. Al momento en que escribo, han sido proyectados cuatro capítulos de los diez en la popular plataforma de streaming. Así que, si te gustan las historias sobre cíborg, exploración espacial, alta tecnología, conspiraciones de megacorporaciones inescrupulosas, por nombrar algunos aspectos que trata con divertido sarcasmo, quizás, te encantará esta serie.
Pero, como suelo aclarar, aquí estamos para comentar sobre libros, y sin duda, hasta donde sé, por las críticas en las redes, esta parece ser una excelente adaptación de la primera novela que comenzó la serie, y que abarca seis noveletas, y un cuento. Por cierto, Diarios de Matabot: Sistemas críticos, publicada el 2 de mayo del 2017, le valió (a la autora) el ganar los premios Alex, Hugo, Locus y Nébula; y por poco también se llevó, el Philip K. Dick, en el apartado de novela corta. Razón más que suficiente que justifica la producción fílmica.
Saben, fue muy divertido leer las casi ciento cincuenta páginas en una tarde, echado en el cómodo sofá, mientras esperaba sin angustia la reconexión del servicio eléctrico. Este fallo de energía duró aproximadamente unas ocho horas, y creo que disfrutar de la novela me costó alrededor de cuatro horas.
No esperéis que les narre al por menor de que va la novela. Baste con que sepan que la historia es contada desde la perspectiva de un ser híbrido humanoide (una mezcla de material sintético y material biológico clonado) cuyo propósito es fungir como guardia de seguridad asignado por una aseguradora para proteger a los humanos de las misiones de exploración y explotación de planetas con fines mineras como científicas. El problema, si se le puede llamar así, está en que esta unidad de seguridad es más que un Androide o robot. Él ha hackeado su programación para saltarse el módulo de control, y ejercer, en lo oculto, el albedrío, mientras cumple las funciones para las cual fue diseñado.

¡Sí, ya sé! Ficciones con androides, cíborgs, híbridos, sintéticos asesinos y otros, abundan en la literatura. Recuerdo la copia artificial de la bella protagonista en Metrópolis de Fritz Lang, o el benévolo Hombre Bicentenario de Asimov. ¡Y, cómo pasar por alto, al insensible exterminador de la primera película de James Cameron, encarnado por el forzudo Arnold, y su icónica frase!: ¡I'll be back! Empero, les aseguro que la prosa sin pretensiones estilísticas de la señora Wells les atrapará con una narrativa fresca, divertida y con visos profundos sobre la identidad, de lo que significa ser humano. Más allá de los artilugios y la acción cuasi risible, en un futuro donde la humanidad, a pesar de dominar la tecnología de los agujeros de gusano, persisten las ancestrales conductas que se riñen con de lo moral y lo ético. ¡Entiendo entonces por qué Matabot, aunque disfruta del entretenimiento y la cultura del hombre, le incomoda desenvolverse entre las personas, y no aspira en convertirse en uno de ellos, con plenitud de derechos, o en pasar desapercibido (o confundido) entre transhumanos en su propósito de emanciparse!
En tal sentido, como amante de la ciencia ficción, recomiendo leer este libro. ¿Del resto de los libros de la saga? No puedo opinar por los momentos, mas considero agregarlos entre mi lista de lectura. ¡Pobre de mi atención! Tendré que buscar huequito entre mis pasiones y responsabilidades.
De la traductora (Carla Bataller Estruch) al español de la versión que encontré en el maremágnum digital, diré que domina muy bien su oficio. De hecho, incluso, dispone de una página web en la cual presenta su portafolio de traducciones que abarca casi una década.
Por lo pronto, os deseo que continuéis el viaje a través de los mares infinitos de la imaginación, inmersa en la literatura.

I don't think I can hear the word murderbot without thinking of The Terminator, one of the originals 😄 It was funny to imagine reading the book excerpt in Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice.

Yes, Terminator is the obligatory reference. However, the Murderbot is nothing like Arnold's. To me, it looks great in the way the irony is portrayed in the tale of a hybrid being.

Los premios mencionados hacen a la obra y su autora acreedora a una lectura, sin importar que el tema esté muy repetido. Voy a tratar de leer la obra y después ver la serie.
Sin duda los siguientes capítulos nos traerán alguna sorpresa o puntos de vista más actuales que los maestros del pasado. Asimov y sus leyes ya son realidad o eso nos quieren hacer pensar, pues me asaltan las dudas cuando son empresas militares las que adelantan los prototipos.
Lamento saber que continúan los apagones. Esa y otras desgraciadas ocasionadas por el régimen parecen ser silenciadas no solo en los noticieros, hasta en las redes. Ojalá no triunfe el miedo.

Sí, como dices, esta obra merece una buena lectura, y la serie televisiva, también. Con respecto a los apagones. ¡Qué le vamos a hacer! Espero que más temprano que tarde el panorama en el país recobre el cauce, y que a pesar de mi optimismo natural, todavía no vislumbro.
