#Wednesday Walk - The Bay of Plenty Beach and Gardens on the Durban Beachfront.

This post is for the #wednesdaywalk challenge and the #makemesmile challenge collaboration. This collaboration initially took place once a month, but due to its popularity, @tattoodjay (of the #wednesdaywalk) and @elizacheng (of #makemesmile) decided to make it a weekly thing.

If you want to know more about the rules, visit this week's post by @tattoodjay where you will find all the rules at the bottom of his post after you've enjoyed his beautiful photos from his walk.

Last week I shared a post about Having Fun, Catching a Train in Mini Town.

Today I would like to show you around, going on a walk in the surrounding areas around Mini Town.

We first decided to take a walk in the gardens surrounding Mini Town.

As we came out, we walked around Mini Town and passed behind it.

Here you can see the fence at the back of Mini Town to the right in the photo below. If you take the stairs at the end of the fence, you will end up on the roof of the Circus Circus Beach Cafe below. If you keep left, you go to the Circus Circus Beach Cafe which is on the Promenade (as you'll see soon).

We decided to first enjoy the view from the roof...

Except for the little walkway along the edges of the roof, the whole roof is covered with artificial grass to blend in with the gardens behind it which are on the same level as the roof.

Standing on the roof, in the photo below, you can see the Snake Park Pier extending into the water.

DSC_4847.jpg

The beach above (north of) this pier, is known as Snake Park Beach, due to the fact that there was a snake park in that area for many years. They gave very interesting tours and lectures, teaching about various snakes in the area, but unfortunately, they had to close their doors some time ago.

In the photo below, we look down south where you can see another pier extending into the water. The beach in front of us, between these two piers, is known as the Bay of Plenty Beach.

DSC_4848.jpg

From here, we decided to first go down to the beach for a while before walking through the gardens.

Down below, on the promenade, this is the Circus Circus Beach Cafe.

You can clearly see the area where I stood on the roof when I took the previous photos.

DSC_4820.jpg

We went down further to go onto the beach, and this palm tree caught my eye looking at it through this frame. I thought it would make a nice photo...lol.

DSC_4817.jpg

The specific spot where we gained access to the beach still hadn't been properly cleared since the floods of last year...but I thought it still created a nice scene for a photo.

DSC_4819.jpg

On the beach, looking out over the Bay of Plenty Beach.

DSC_4822.jpg

We walked down to the pier.

Standing at the beginning of the pier, I took this photo of a fisherman, on his way to the end of the pier where he would join the other fishermen.

Standing on the pier, admiring the surf coming in...

Fishermen at the end of the pier, with the surf breaking just below them.

Looking inland from the pier, this is the view of the Elangeni Hotel on the Durban Beachfront. The Elangeni Hotel is a nice, upmarket hotel and is part of the Southern Sun Group.

DSC_4843.jpg

From here, we decided to go for a walk in the gardens.

We passed over the roof of the Circus Circus Beach Cafe again. From their roof, you walk straight into the gardens on the same level with the fence of Mini Town visible to the right again and the Elangeni Hotel right in front of us.

DSC_4845.jpg

To our left, was the Durban Skate Park (which I also shared about last week) with the promenade visible behind it in the background.

DSC_4854.jpg

The atmosphere in the gardens was calm and peaceful.

DSC_4853.jpg

There are some really nice walkways you can use to stroll through the gardens.

DSC_4856.jpg

Zooming in this area, framed by the tree...

DSC_4857.jpg

A nice, colorful scene in the garden...

DSC_4858.jpg

On our way out, almost at the car, we came across these pigeons. I walked right up to them and took photos to my heart's desire...they didn't mind me and didn't bother to fly away or even get any distance between us...lol.

DSC_4872.jpg

And with that, our outing came to an end.

Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!

I am so impressed that I don't know where to start... First I tell you that it is a pleasure to know you through your words, I love to feel part of the experience when the narrator and the photographs are excellent. You didn't mention it, but for me as a viewer I think what I loved the most is the beautiful sky, that day was perfect to pose in front of your camera with dreamy shapes and colors.

Overall the whole beach is amazing, especially the pier, although you make it look better with your pictures. I am always excited to see waters of almost crystal clear greens or blues, but in this images the sea looks grey and yet I loved it, again I think the sky played a key role in your photos. Regarding the park, wow, how awesome to see the pigeons and that you captured the moment with such elegance, definitely your work is amazing and I'm glad to discover other lovers of Wednesday walks ✌️

Hi, @jesuslnrs! Thank you so much for your positive feedback and your kind words! It means a lot to me and I do appreciate it!

Yes, the sky was beautiful indeed on that day, and in the two images looking out over the ocean (images 2 and 3), I tried to capture as much as I could of the sky. We had some rainy weather approaching the land from over the ocean, so you can see how the clouds are getting darker as you look out over the ocean.

I completely understand what you are talking about... getting excited to see waters of almost crystal clear greens or blues! I love that too! And yes, the sky played a key role in the sea looking grey in my photos. I normally find when the clouds start covering the sky, the sea starts getting that grey color.

Those pigeons were amazing and I had fun taking photos of them!

It's really nice meeting you and thank you for stopping by and for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment!

Street-wise gang better be careful before they become KFC chicken !LOLZ

Gardens still looking splendid, snake park has been gone for quite some time. Along that area they used to have the Village Green which was a large tent for live musicians many years ago.

Another nice walk through parts of Durban.

Hahaha... Well said!

Yes, I have to be honest, I am quite surprised by how well the gardens are kept. It was quite pleasant walking there. I have to add though, you need to pick the right time...and stay away when the crowds start showing up...

I'm aware of the snake park being gone for quite some time. However, I can't recall being familiar with the Village Green though... Maybe that was before we moved down to Durban.

Thank you for your feedback, @joanstewart! I do appreciate it!

Places we frequented often earlier years, Japanese gardens, Umgeni bird park, Mitchell's Park all places we have not seen in a long time!

Have a wonderful evening!

(Edited)

We still want to go to Umgeni Bird Park. The Japanese Gardens you are talking about, is it the one in Durban? Or in Pinetown? We went to the Sarnia Japanese Gardens in Pinetown on Monday (on the public holiday). I am doing a post about that tomorrow...

It wasn't too bad, so I'll share some photos tomorrow as mentioned.

Enjoy your evening!

The Japanese Gardens in Durban is the one I am referring to.

Pietermaritzburg was another for day visit adventures to the museum, National Botanical Gardens, old section with cobblestone roads, I doubt it is safe to venture there now. Seasonal visit to butterfly farm or picking strawberries another I am not sure about availability today.

Plenty to do and see once you look around, all depends on safety now.

Some interesting places you are mentioning here. We haven't really been to any places in Pietermaritzburg. We've been to the Botanical Gardens in Durban though.

I'll have to find out about the butterfly farm and strawberry picking...that sounds interesting👍

I do agree with you...plenty to do and see once you look around...but safety is always a priority. Whenever we plan on visiting a new venue, we first take a drive out and scan the area along the way and we only get out once we feel safe.

It's the best to always be on full alert, all these places we went to when the children were young and areas were safe back then. Pietermaritzburg has amazing architecture, history and museums tucked away.

Have a great weekend.

Yes, I can imagine it was safe back then. We should maybe see what it's like to see some of the places you mention in Pietrmaritzburg. We seldom go that way, so we are not very familiar with that area yet.

You must have a great weekend too!

Tala Game Reserve, Camperdown is a great day outing with a picnic basket, not sure what that costs of late, if you have not done that yet it is the closest to Durban.

Yes, we've been to Tala Game Reserve in January. If I remember correctly, I think it was something like R80.00 to enter. It was an awesome outing and we would like to go back at some time!

Tala is a lovely place to visit with animals and bird life, I know they were not expensive either.
