#Wednesday Walk - Jan Smuts Avenue in Winston Park: A Street in Transition.

This post is for the #wednesdaywalk challenge and the #makemesmile challenge collaboration. This collaboration initially took place once a month, but due to its popularity, @tattoodjay (of the #wednesdaywalk) and @elizacheng (of #makemesmile) decided to make it a weekly thing.

If you want to know more about the rules, visit the Wednesday Walk Community, started by @tattoodjay. You will find all the rules there if you want to start posting in this great community.

In this week's post, I want to share something that fascinates me year-round here on the east coast of South Africa.

And that is the change of seasons.

Last weekend, we decided to take a walk along Jan Smuts Avenue in Winston Park, west of Durban, South Africa. As you all know by now, this "tree-lined street" has always fascinated me.

In my opinion, these tall plane trees form a tunnel-like canopy that changes dramatically with each season, making it one of the most beautiful avenues in the area.

Jan Smuts Avenue is more than just a road. It feels like stepping into a natural cathedral, with tree trunks like pillars and branches arching overhead. Whether you’re walking, jogging, or just slowing down to admire the scenery, the atmosphere here has a timeless calm regardless of the season.

These photos were taken last weekend, right as we are starting the slow shift from winter into spring.

The changes are subtle but noticeable:

  • The bare branches from winter now carry the first hints of green.
  • Fallen leaves scatter across the roadside, leaving patterns on the pavement.
  • The cool, damp air carries the earthy scent of the season, making the walk feel fresh and alive - especially on the day I took these photos, as it was a cool, cloudy day.

Nature has its own rhythm, and this street is the perfect canvas to watch it unfold.

Walking here, I couldn’t help but notice how different the avenue feels compared to a few months ago.

In the heat of summer, it offered deep shade. During winter, the bare branches created a stark, skeletal beauty. Now, it feels like a promise of renewal — a start of new life and a reminder that every season carries its own character.

It’s also one of those places that makes you slow down and forget about the hustle and bustle out there. The only sound you hear is the sound of your own footsteps and some birds singing in the trees. While admiring the way the road curves gently into the distance, the silence only gets broken now and then when a vehicle passes by.

I heard that some of the people owning property in this area don't live here permanently. They rent the property out to international tourists while visiting South Africa, and they get paid in dollars.

In my last photo for today, it is clear how colourful the scenery is becoming.

It’s easy to forget how much beauty exists in the everyday streets around us.

This short walk through Jan Smuts Avenue reminded me that seasonal transitions aren’t just about weather — they’re about noticing change, renewal, and continuity in small ways.

Thank you for reading my post. I do appreciate it!

What I would like to know: how is the season shifting where you are right now, and what does it look like? I am always fascinated by the scenery in photos I see from other countries.
