The Detail at the Beginning of Spring.
Over the weekend, we went for a visit to the Durban Botanic Gardens.
My goal was to focus on the change of season and hope to find good evidence of new life, announcing the spring season after the winter season.
But I found more than that.
I took my time to capture the beauty of these white blossoms and the various stages they were in. Each stage told its own story - from the first signs of a new flower appearing, to the unfolding of the petals, to the beauty of a full flower in bloom.
Since I discovered my passion for photography, I noticed how it gets me to slow down and notice details I would otherwise have missed.
With these three images, I tried to capture not just the flowers themselves, but also the feeling of calm they bring when viewed closely.
From Bud to Bloom.
This typifies spring for me. The first signs of new life. It's fresh, it's new, and colourful. A promise of some beautiful coming.

The detail of nature starts unfolding. The moment where form, light, and detail meet.
The Beauty of the Flower in Full Bloom
The flower is at its most elegant — open, graceful, and complete.
Reflection
Each image tells its own story:
- First, there is the anticipation of something new,
- Then, it's time for the transition in the unfolding petals,
- And finally, the completion in the open bloom.
As photographers, we often chase dramatic landscapes or grand scenes. But sometimes, the most rewarding images come from simply noticing what’s in front of us — small, fleeting moments of nature’s quiet beauty.
And for me personally, on this outing, I found even more than what I was looking for. I was looking for evidence of the beginning of a new season. But taking the time to capture these shots, I found the beginning, the unfolding process, right into the colourful end product that I associate with spring.
I hope my photos can explain this better than I can explain it in words.
Thank you for reading my post. I do appreciate it.
