Giants of the Ocean Visiting Durban Harbour (Part 2)

Durban Harbour Cruise Series – A Look Back Before the Next Departure.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been working on a series around the cruise ships arriving and departing through Durban Harbour.

I published the first post in this series last week. If you missed it, you can find it here:

While I plan to photograph the MSC Opera’s departure on Friday at 2 pm, I thought I’d take a moment this week to look back at my own experience onboard the MSC Sinfonia.

These aren’t new photos. They’re from a cruise we took a few years ago. But revisiting them reminded me why I enjoy capturing these ships so much — not just the vessels themselves, but the atmosphere, the spaces, and the feeling of being out at sea.

A Glimpse Inside: Relaxing and Dining at Sea.

This was one of the quieter dining rooms onboard the Sinfonia — warm lighting, curved seating, and round porthole windows that always reminded you that you were in motion, heading toward somewhere new...and on the ocean.

There’s something about cruise dining rooms that blends elegance with comfort. Even when they’re empty, they feel full of stories. And in you mind, you can already picture what it would look like a little later. You can hear people laughing and having relaxed conversations.

Here are similar areas and lounges where you can sit down and just relax.

Life on Deck.

Looking back at this shot immediately brings back that peaceful hum of being mid-ocean — the long wooden deck, the line of loungers, the open horizon stretching in all directions.

It’s the kind of calm that makes time stretch.

At the back of the ship, there is also a putt-putt course.

Why I’m Sharing This Now.

With the MSC Opera set to depart Durban this Friday at 2pm, I’ll be out capturing the moment as part of my ongoing harbour series.

Until then, this little throwback serves as:

  • a warm-up to the next instalment

  • a reminder of the atmosphere onboard

  • and a way to keep this series alive while I prepare the next round of images

Sometimes looking back makes the anticipation even better.

Coming Up Next.

Coming up next week will be:

  • The MSC Opera departing Durban — Friday, November 28 @ 14:00
  • New photos, new vantage points
  • Another addition to the Durban Passenger Ship Series

Thanks for joining me on this journey — both the old and the new.

I appreciate you reading my posts.

Note:
Seeing that we went on board the MSC Sinfonia in Cape Town Harbour, that will be the location pin for this post.

Cruises sound great never been on one myself and after what happened to them when the covid lockdowns were put in place i don't know if i would trust it to be honest.

They still have all the emergency powers no government will let them go in a hurry.

However i am sure they are great experiences all the same.

Have the best one
