Discovering a New Giba Gorge Hiking Trail
Whenever you mention Giba Gorge in our part of the country (South Africa), everybody thinks of the popular mountain bike venue.
But there are other areas where you can access Giba Gorge free of charge.
One such place can be found on the western side of Winston Park in Gillits. Winston Park is situated in the Upper Highway Area, west of Durban.
We discovered one of these hiking trails in Giba Gorge last weekend. It is well maintained with safe parking for your car. As you can see, horses, cyclists, and hikers are all welcome.
At first (especially when you drive by), it doesn't look like much. Maybe a nice little park for relaxation.
But as you start entering, you soon find the trail's starting point. I appreciate that I can bring our dog along for a nice walk.
As you enter, the trail looks very inviting.
Down below, a little stream is running alongside the trail.
A friendly warning from Mother Nature to rather stay on the trail and not wander off into the bushes.
We kept descending.
We noticed a nice rock next to the trail and decided to keep it in mind if we decided to take a break on our way back...lol.
It would be perfect if you need to sit down for a break.
A little further down, the stream below us bent to the right and we were about to cross over it with this bridge.
Just after crossing the bridge, we found a nice open space with a bench where you can sit down to enjoy the silence of nature.
In this area, it looks like three streams meet up. Here is one of those streams flowing down toward us.
Just a few paces away, there was another bridge to cross one of the other streams.
There are a lot of names on this bridge. They are grouped by year. I assume these must be athletes who completed a marathon along this trail (as they do on the Comrades Marathon's Wall of Honor).
Standing on the bridge, looking downstream.
Here, we also found this "photo map" of the area.
At this point, we decided to turn around and return to the car. But now that we know of this trail, we want to come back and cover more distance on the route.
Going back to the car, meant going uphill, presenting new views from a different perspective.
For our local Hivers who might want to visit this area, I include a screenprint from Pinmapple.
The car park is in that sharp bend to the left where it shows "Giba Gorge Nature Reserve."
