A childhood dream fulfilled: My visit to the haunted Torre ni David in Bukidnon.
Hello everyone. I have long been curious about this mysterious house in Barangay Cabangahan, Malaybalay, Bukidnon. And last Friday, June 27, 2025, I took the opportunity to stop by and take some photos. The house features its own man and animal sculptures, as well as baroque architecture. I have always been fascinated by this house and I have always wanted to have a closer look since my childhood. But unfortunately, I always rode a bus back then. After working and living in different cities, I finally had a chance to ask my husband to stop so I could take a closer look and take photos of the house. Casa Alegre or Torre ni David, as it's more affectionately known, stands as a peculiar landmark in Cabangahan, Bukidnon. It's a whimsical, almost fantastical house that captivates me and I long to know its origin and the story behind it.
According to my research, it was built in the 1950s by David Valmorida a bus inspector who fell in love with the valley and decided to build his dream home in this place. For David and his family, it wasn't just a house it was a testament to a family’s expanding joy. Based on the story, every time a new baby was born, the family would extend a room or wing, until the structure looked unique. It is a ship-like form. They also said that it has an airplane-like structure on top before.
The colorful house is situated along the Sayre highway, almost surreal in its design.
The three-story house has eight human figures. It was described by the owner not as mere statues, but as guardians or sentinels of the house. The male statues stand in various poses, adding to their fantastical ambiance. One stood tall and straight, others leaned, and some lay dramatically like they're carrying the roof of the house, creating a dynamic visual that is both striking and unforgettable.
The sheer size of the house, surrounded by towering trees contributed to its mystique.
It felt both welcoming and somewhat menacing at once. As I took the pictures, I felt a ghostly bump sending a strange sensation. I had a premonition that anytime an image or a shadow would come out from somewhere. The house is a place of both joy and mystery. Though I felt so much joy because of the opportunity to get a closer look, fear gripped me 😆. It seems like the atmosphere felt heavy and oppressive, perhaps because of the story I heard 😁. I quickly asked my daughter to leave. I was not able to take photos of the house interior from the broken windows. I regretted missing the chance, but my fear prevented me from continuing.
The once-vibrant colors have faded, the paint peeling to reveal the aged wood underneath. The house, though still standing, is clearly in disrepair. Holes riddle the walls, the roof sags precariously and the interior is a testament to the passage of years.
The neighbors' whispers led us to believe that the house is haunted. According to them, the place is filled with unexplained noises, like a lady crying during a full moon or some footsteps at night, and unsettling occurrences of a white lady, a kapre ( is a mythical, tree-dwelling creature often described as a giant, hairy, dark-skinned being, resembling a human-ape hybrid, known for smoking cigars), and dwarfs.
The once-open, cheerful layout is now obscured by the decay. The ship-like structure, the tower, and other parts of the house were ruined by time. But the signature architectural elements and the whimsical placement of the animals still remain.
These details, while now somewhat grotesque in their broken state, maintain a unique character, offering a haunting beauty. The now-dilapidated walls, though riddled with holes, bear the marks of a history etched in both laughter and sorrow.
The large trees that once surrounded the house now appear almost conspiratorial, casting shadows that intensify its air of mystery. Yet, even amidst the decay, the lasting image of Torre ni David remains a powerful one. It's a place where past and present collide, where childhood wonder meets adult understanding of time's inevitable effect. A landmark that continues to tell a story of joy, creativity, and the passage of time.
🤡Note: I include some of the pictures online to help the reader visualize and connect with the story. The name of the owner is visible in the pictures.
Just one look at David's Tower makes my hair stand on end. The human-like guards or sentinels are amazing but there's a mystery wrapped around them that I feel. Just the first sight of the gigantic trees will make you feel something is eerie, if you know what I mean. In Mindanao, it's always said that when there are big trees, there must be an Encanto living there. Do you believe what the elders say? Brrrr...I'm really scared by the look of the house. My mind is playing tricks. 🤩
Is that house abandoned? I feel a twinge of remorse that after building such a unique house, there's no one living there, but it still looks very sturdy and livable. I think the materials used in that house are durable even if it's made of wood. Narra or Apitong was probably used there. I also saw something similar in Davao de Oro. The house is owned by a Spanish family, people call that house "Train House". Could they not be related?
Yes, Ate, it was really bone chilling. I was not able to take pictures of the interior because the atmosphere became heavy and unsettling. The air felt unusually cold 😁 perhaps that was just my imagination👻. The house was abandoned, I learned, having been home to the Pacana and Vamorida families. I don't know why they left. The house is largely uninhabitable, while some portions might still be used. The walls, windows, and roofs at the rear and sides are dilapidated. Remarkably, it's still standing after approximately 75 years since 1950s. The supporting posts remain intact, as you can see in the pictures. But Filipino belief holds that if a house or its content remains unbroken, like the men statue standing as if it they were supporting the whole house, spirits might inhabit it. Awooooooooooo......👻 👻. I'm unsure of the "train house" in Davao. Where is it located? I am excited to visit it if possible.
Wow! The house is 75 years old and yet it's still standing? The foundation is beautiful then! The wooden materials used in that house are sturdy! The architectural design is beautiful, not to mention the so-called sentinels of the edifice. My hair stands on end when I look at the human-like posts and the huge trees around. You also dare to come near there! If it were me, I would tell myself, @diosarich, retreat!🤣🤣🤣 It's spine-chilling! I just can't imagine when the night comes! 🥶🥶🥶
By the way, the "Train House" I'm talking about isn't in Davao City. You can find it in Pantukan, Davao de Oro, in the "Poblacion". I'm just not sure if that house is still standing because the wall materials used were interlacing thatch or rattan.
Yes,it is. The human statue looks intact. This maybe because hardwood was used as you mentioned earlier. The narra, apitong and all those kind of hard wood were commonly used in house constructin before. I believe this type of wood is long lasting and are resistant to termites. I Think the owner have it cleaned as it is a testament, treasure and people admire as they pass by. 🤣 You are not the only one whose hair stands on an end when seeing the picture. I had also expecience the spine-chilling fear even at this time😨.

I can feel your excitement and a little fear while exploring it. The way you described the house with the statues, the colors and the shape, really brings the place to life.
Wow. Thank you so much. I am so glad about your feedback. I am thrilled that you can vividly visualize the Torre ni David through my description.
This is fascinating and spooky! 👀 It's awesome that you finally got to fulfill your childhood dream of seeing Torre ni David up close ✨ The story of it expanding with each new baby is so unique and heartwarming, even if it now has this haunted vibe. I definitely felt that 'ghostly bump' sensation just reading about it 😅 Those sculptures and the ship-like design are truly captivating 💖
It was a dream come true, indeed but it wasn't as pleasant as I'd hoped 😁🤣. It is not as awesome as what you think haha. Honestly it was so scary that my hair was practically on fire. Undeniably, the sculpture and other features of the house are really good. It can really captivate people who pass by.
Oh! The way you described the house gave it so much personality, it was more than just a structure, but a living character with its own soul, stories, and secrets.

Oh! Thank you for asking! What really brought the house to life for me, the statues as “guardians” standing in different poses. They're like they have personalities and roles to silently watch and protect the home.
Thank you so much! I’m happy my writing also resonates with you. I appreciate that!🤗💕
