The Suzuki Samurai: A Love at First Sight That Faded Too Fast

The other day, I was out running errands when I spotted something that immediately caught my eye—a white Suzuki Samurai. It looked like the kind of car built for adventure, something straight out of an old-school off-road expedition. Boxy, rugged, and unapologetically vintage, it had an undeniable charm that modern SUVs just don’t have.

For a moment, I imagined myself cruising through mountain trails or desert roads, wind in my hair, the little Samurai bouncing over rough terrain like a true off-road warrior. Intrigued, I went home and started researching. That’s when reality hit.

The Harsh Truth: Slow and Thirsty

As much as the Suzuki Samurai looks like a pocket-sized adventure beast, its specs tell a different story. It’s slow—really slow. With a tiny engine that struggles to keep up with highway speeds, this isn’t the kind of vehicle you take on a long road trip unless you enjoy watching cars fly past you. And for something this small, you’d think it’d be fuel-efficient, right? Nope. Despite its lightweight design, the Samurai drinks fuel like a much bigger SUV, making it less practical than it looks.

Still Love the Design, Though...

Even though the performance specs were disappointing, I can’t deny that the Samurai still holds a special appeal. It’s one of those vehicles that makes you want to love it, even if the numbers don’t justify it. Maybe that’s why so many people still restore and modify them, pushing past their flaws for the sake of nostalgia and personality.

Would I get one? Probably not. But if I see another one parked on the street, I’ll still stop to admire it—just from a distance, without getting my hopes up.
