Reducing working hours would be better than shortening workdays

I don't work 9-5 so I cannot speak like one who does, but from the little experience I had working in my earlier days, 5 working days does the deal.

I can only imagine what working four days a week would look like; you would have to work for longer hours to make up for all the work you wouldn't be doing during the remaining days.

Imagine that nine to five workers work for about eight hours for five days, then they have to take out one day, it means on days like probably Mondays, they would need to work from 9 am till maybe 8 pm to be able to meet up with all of the work and deadlines they have to meet.

Having 5 days to work has a lot of advantages. You can easily spend quality time at work knowing that you have a couple of hours to go home and rest for the following day or spend time with your children, partner, or both, you have time to take care of yourself; prepare meals, read a book or watch television.

But imagine returning from work by 8 pm every day, and that's the standard. While your system may adapt to it, you would lose the time to do the little things that matter.
By the weekend when you're finally free, you realize that you have even more work to do.

You have to clean up your house, wash your clothes, prepare meals for the week, spend time with your kids and loved ones, or friends as the case may be, relax yourself, and so on.

In most cases, you may not even get all of those things done because you already feel extremely exhausted and overwhelmed.

There would also be cases where people would have to take the rest of their work home to continue if they are not able to make it within the week. Some bosses would use that opportunity to give you herculean tasks because they know you have three free days. Forgetting so soon that you spent the other four days running their companies and making things work.

From experience, it's really annoying when you have to take work from the office back to your house because there's no time to finish it up at work. I love to leave my work life at work and when I return home, I know it's just me relaxing, not throwing papers around and looking for documents to work on.

Currently, I work from home and this makes me work longer hours than anyone at the office but because it is my default job, I cannot complain. However, it would be so annoying to leave my workspace if I was working physically and return to the warmth of my home to continue working.

It may work for some people but for people like me, it's a no-no.

I would prefer that we stick to the traditional eight-to-five or nine-to-five working hours because four days a week promises to be both unbearable and annoying.

Again, there are some people who would prefer this four-day workweek because they detest the overly serious work atmosphere and are probably most productive when they're in the comfort of their homes instead of when they're under the scrutiny of their bosses.

Some other people wouldn't mind their work pushing into their rest hours so they wouldn't work as hard during the week because they know that they have three extra days to cover up with but whatever the situation, I still think the majority would go with the normal work days and work hours they've been working with.

One more point to consider is that If the work days are reduced, it couldn't possibly affect all those who do not have to work for five days like other people. For some people who have to work for just three days a week and for those who work every day, reducing the work days may not change anything in their calendars.

It would only basically be affecting those people who work for five days a week and I think those set of people make up the majority of the working class in Nigeria.

In conclusion, it would be really good if working hours were reduced instead of working days. I'm sure that everyone would appreciate having an extra couple of hours on their hands to rest or take care of things in their lives, but if that's not possible, then the working days should be left the way they are.

I would even prefer working every day with the working hours reduced significantly, than reducing the amount of work days and having to increase the working hours.

What is good for the goose may not be good for the gander but this is my opinion and I think the majority would go with it too.

You have stated quite an important point and I believe reducing the working hours instead of days will go a long way for workers. With that, they have more than to rest and do other things.

Although it won't fit in for all jobs, there can be ways to compensate those whose work falls in that category.

Couldn't agree more, @george-dee
It doesn't fit in for all jobs but there are other ways it could go or they get compensated.

You are absolutely right, we should focus on reducing the working time because I see that in today's time companies exploit their employees just for a few bucks of profit and make them work so much that they don't even get time for their family. I see here that there are many companies that make their employees work for 10 to 12 hours a day and in return pay them so little that they are not even able to survive for a month.

Reducing work time has it's own benefit for the company/organization itself. Most of them don't see it this way.

They just have to look at their profits.

Yeah...I agree with you on that
If the times spent at work place could be reduced, it would be better than the days. Cause in the system we find ourselves in the country Nigeria, Once the days are reduced, organization will find a way of pilling the works of that one day into the remain four days.
And that will be quiet stressful for works

Welcome to Nigeria 😅😅😅😅
Pilling the work of one day into the remaining 4 days defeats the aim. But it is what it is.

Thank you for stopping by, @ebass
