American Coins from the Turn of the Century

One of the collections I have from long ago is the Americana Series of coins. An example of a penny, nickel, dime, and half-dollar from around the turn of the century.

They're all pretty worn, but are still good examples of the specimens.

I like the half-dollar best as it's the largest and best example of the Barber series of coins.

We can also see the reverse of the coins. They have very handsome designs in my opinion. They don't make them like these anymore.

The old penny has a particularly interesting design on the back. Even though it's worn down, it still has an appealing design.

Racketeer Nickel

This is NOT a racketter nickel as the word "CENT" is clearly under the V. But the history of the original design is fascinating.

The first design of the nickel didn't include the word "CENT" on the back, but had the large "V" meaning five in Roman Numerals. Before people were familiar with this coin, tricksters would plate this nickel in gold and try to pass it as a new $5.00 gold coin! This is why CENTS was added in clear letters under the "V" so there would be no confusion about the value of this coin.

It was called a "Racketeer Nickel". An authentic gold-plated Racketeer nickel goes for a lot as a collector's item. The most famous racketter was a man named Josh Tatum. He became so famous, the phrase "I'm just Joshing" came from his name.

This is an authentic five dollar gold coin:

This is the gold-plated Liberty Nickel. Could it pass for a five dollar gold coin?

If someone has never seen a real gold five dollar coin before, knowing it was a "liberty" bust with stars around it, yes someone could be tricked.

Or "Joshed".

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations.

Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books.

I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.

I don't know if it's just me, but I can see that these older coins had a lot of love and effort put into making them look great.

When I read the word Nickel, I remembered the time in Venezuela when all the circulation coins were Nickel, once there was a shortage to the point that all the Nickel coins disappeared, as usual some groups of criminals started to collect all those coins, then melt them and sell them to the Chinese, when people found out about that, they also started to do the same, in any case the coins disappeared, there are still a few left in the hands of collectors.

That's fascinating! Nickel is a "war-time" metal, demand usually goes up when nations are army building. Interesting that China was buying nickel metal. The US "nickel" only has 25% nickel and the rest copper, so I don't know why they're called a "nickel". It was the first non silver coin in the US (besides the penny), so I think the name was an attempt to created demand for an unusual metal for it's time. Nickel was still pretty rare at the turn of the century, but it's very common today.

I wonder if the Bolivar can still be found these days, or if they're all melted down!

No, in 1982, the central bank declared that there were no more nickel coins, and in that same communiqué they said that they were already commanding to make new coins, to solve the problem of the shortage of coins, they created bills like this one

These small bills are the size of the Monopoly game bills, and Venezuelans called them Monopoly bills.

Monopoly bills... switching from metal-backed coins to paper does feel like switching to play money. !BBH

Around the end of the twentieth century, it sounds a bit strange to talk about something that sounds like history, we are part of this new millennium in which artificial intelligence will be relevant, as well as cryptocurrencies and robots of course, this is how the history of which the new generations will speak is being written.

We have to remember history and not rely on AI to remember it for us.... It wouldn't be difficult to a generation to put absolute trust into AI, and believe every narrative given. Seems impossible now, but how much history has already been forgotten and/or rewritten? !BBH

Today, school children are not being taught how to sign their Names... They'll have to put an X and Print their Names underneath...

That's a fascinating bit of history.
It's amazing how something as small as the absence of the word "CENT" could lead to such clever trickery.

Our country's coins are no longer worth collecting. The old ones have high silver content and no longer minted though.
