[Finish the Tale contest] Part 4. Their final plan

I started writing a new story for the Finish the Tale contest.

Here is how the previous part finished:

And now the final year had come.

Over the past ten years, the villagers had considered every possible idea to find the criminal. They made a list of everyone who had visited the village on the days when the girl disappeared. They checked each person on the list. But in those ten years, there was one individual who had never returned. Which meant that in that year, he had come under a false name. And the villagers did not know his face. That made the task far more difficult.

Everyone regretted not listening to the young man sooner. Perhaps he had even seen the kidnapper - after all, he had rarely left the girl’s side. But the young man died the same day he told his story.

This year was their last attempt - their final plan to catch the kidnapper. It seemed like the most absurd plan of all, but there were no other options left. They had tried everything they could. And ten whole years had already passed.
