The dream of being fluent in the language / LOH Contest 240

Source

How many languages can you speak? And what language would you most like to learn?

I can only speak my native language, Spanish. However, I've always been interested in English, and I'd say I know a little bit of the language. I love it so much that when I was a teenager, my dream was to study it as a career. But as soon as I graduated from high school, for various reasons, this dream was dashed. So, for a long time, I had a kind of love-hate relationship with the English language. On the one hand, it was still present in my life because most of the music I listen to is in English. But on the other hand, it reminded me of those bad times when I tried but couldn't achieve my educational goals related to the language, especially at a time when I didn't even have internet access, very different from today, where you can learn so much with just a click or an app. However, these days, I've reconnected with the English language and have made quite a bit of progress. I can read and understand a lot of the written language without needing a translator most of the time.

But I couldn't say I'm fluent in English, although reading it isn't that complicated for me. However, reading a language or understanding its meaning is one thing, and being able to listen and understand it by ear alone is another. Writing it is also difficult. In my learning journey, the most difficult thing about the language is understanding it by ear alone. I think that aspect can only improve if I interact directly with people who speak that language, and that's really difficult to achieve because I don't have anyone to converse with.

However, the number of words you can learn in a language is also limited by the area of knowledge in which you operate. Having an intermediate level in the language to have a simple conversation is not the same as having to navigate professional areas where technical terms and the use of formal language can be very different. That's why I would like to continue learning the language on my own, but I also think I would like to be able to improve my listening and better understand the pronunciations that I struggle with. 😊

English is also not my first language, I improve my listening skill by watching movies without subtitles haha... Try to start with a topic you are really curious about, that'll help. Good luck my friend.

Thank you very much for the advice. So far, I can watch the movie with English subtitles, and I can read and understand, but I'll try without the subtitles 😊

Tell me about it! I was very much interested in Tagalog in my childhood days. But learning it wasn't that accessible to me, but now, with an app, you can learn!

Also, this is very interesting! I am very passionate about learning Spanish, and since I can speak English and Spanish is your area of expertise, maybe we can work together, hehe.

Nowadays, there are so many applications and facilities thanks to the internet, which is why I've been able to improve a lot, something that was very difficult in my youth 😄
