A Day Trip to Kiama: Witnessing the Famous Blowhole
Finally, semester break has arrived, and with it came the chance to explore more destinations around Sydney. After visiting the Blue Mountains and walking the trails of Royal National Park, I felt it was time to look further south along the coast. This time, my journey took me to Kiama, a small coastal town famous for its spectacular natural wonder — the Kiama Blowhole.
Like my previous adventures, this was just a simple day trip. The plan was straightforward: take the early train from Central Station in Sydney, enjoy the scenic two-hour ride, and spend the morning discovering what Kiama has to offer.
The Journey South

The train ride itself was already part of the experience. Passing through suburbs and small towns, the view gradually shifted from urban landscapes to open green fields and glimpses of the ocean. It felt refreshing to simply sit back, watch the scenery, and know that the destination promised something unique.
When the train finally arrived at Kiama Station, the air was different — fresher, cooler, and with that salty hint of the sea. From the station, it was only a short walk uphill towards the headland where both the Blowhole and the Lighthouse are located.
First Impressions at the Headland

As I reached the top, the first landmark to greet me was the Kiama Lighthouse, standing tall against a moody morning sky. Its white frame contrasted beautifully with the shifting clouds above. Around the lighthouse, there were wide open grassy areas where visitors could stroll, sit, or simply enjoy the ocean view.
Walking closer to the cliff, the sound of crashing waves became stronger. The pathway was well maintained, guiding visitors toward the main attraction. Along the way, there were informative boards explaining the history of the Blowhole and the geological features that make it possible.
The Spectacle of the Blowhole
Standing near the viewing platform, I finally saw the Kiama Blowhole in action. It starts quietly as waves enter the rocky cavity beneath the cliffs, then suddenly—a surge of water shoots upwards, spraying into the sky with great force. The crowd around me gasped and cheered with every burst.
Each eruption was slightly different. Sometimes it was just a misty spray, while at other times the water rose dramatically several meters high. Waiting for the next burst became part of the fun, as no one could perfectly predict when it would happen or how strong it would be.
I spent a good amount of time here, taking photos, watching the reactions of fellow visitors, and feeling the sea breeze on my face. The combination of sound, movement, and raw natural energy was captivating.
Around the Lighthouse
After enjoying the Blowhole, I wandered back towards the lighthouse. The grassy headland offered a peaceful contrast to the crashing waves. Paths stretched along the cliffs, giving different angles to view both the lighthouse and the ocean beyond.
At one point, the sky cleared just enough for the sun to peek through, creating dramatic rays of light over the water . These moments reminded me why coastal walks never disappoint—the scenery constantly changes with the movement of clouds, waves, and light. There were also benches facing the sea. Sitting there, I could simply let time slow down, enjoying the rhythmic sound of waves far below.
Walking Toward the Harbor
From the headland, I followed a pathway leading down toward the town and harbor area. Along the way, the views opened to more calm waters, fishing boats, and families strolling near the waterfront. The transition from wild ocean cliffs to a sheltered harbor showed two different faces of Kiama.
The harbor itself was lively, with people preparing boats, visitors exploring, and seagulls circling above. The mix of activity gave the town a friendly coastal charm.
Exploring the Town
Kiama is not just about the Blowhole. The town itself has heritage buildings, small shops, and cafes that give it character. As I walked through the streets, I noticed old colonial-style structures that added a historical feel to the place. The combination of palm trees, wide streets, and colorful storefronts made it a pleasant area to explore on foot.
One highlight was passing the old Town Hall building, its architecture standing proudly with the Australian flag waving above. It felt like stepping back into another era, yet still alive with the energy of a modern coastal community.
Reflections on the Trip
The visit to Kiama was a short day trip, but it offered a refreshing mix of natural wonder and small-town charm. The Blowhole lived up to its reputation, showing the raw power of the ocean, while the lighthouse and grassy headland added beauty and calmness to the setting.
The harbor and the town itself completed the experience, reminding me that every coastal town has its rhythm and story.
If you are in Sydney and have a free day, Kiama is an easy and rewarding trip. The train ride is comfortable, the walk from the station is simple, and the views are unforgettable. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that only take a single day, yet leave memories strong enough to last for years. Until next time!
