Jackie había postergado el hacer público su gusto musical. Desde niña tenía a su hermano Brooks, que siempre la apoyaba y era su cómplice, y que juntos solían hacer travesuras en el estudio musical del abuelo, corriendo y jugando sin parar con los instrumentos, incluso haciéndolos sonar de manera divertida, cosa que obviamente años atrás hizo que Brooks se enfocara en la música y se volviera alguien muy ágil con el teclado, pues sabía que sus melodías eran capaces de alegrar a su hermana y ella siempre estaba orgullosa, por lo que la familia esperaba que también Jackie en algún momento mostrara algún talento y gusto musical.

La cosa era que ella no quería que su familia viera cuál era su gusto musical, pues aunque sí le gustaban mucho los instrumentos y solía tocar algunos con su hermano para ayudarlo en prácticas o composiciones, lo que realmente le gustaba a Jackie era uno que no era muy común en su familia, por no decir que casi nadie lo tocaba o ejecutaba de manera prolija, y temía que si llegaba a compartirla con su familia, esta la juzgaría y, por consecuencia, no sería vista de la misma manera y tal vez perdería el cariño que tanto atesoraba.

Esta indecisión mantenía a Jackie baja de ánimos y, sin darse cuenta, la tenía alejándose poco a poco de todos, y su hermano Brooks comenzaba a notar que no era la misma cuando lo ayudaba en sus prácticas; estaba como vacía, sin esa chispa que la caracterizaba, y cuando trataba de hablar con ella, esta lograba cambiar de tema y alejarse. Jackie tenía su lugar especial en el club de música de su instituto, donde solía ir a tocar su instrumento favorito con mucha energía, pues ella no era juzgada para nada mientras estaba entre esas cuatro paredes tocando y expresando todo lo que le gustaba la música. Una tarde, mientras ella estaba sumergida en su música, se fijó en que un joven la miraba fijo y, luego que terminó de tocar, este aplaudió suavemente mientras le decía que era una melodía muy linda la que acababa de escuchar.

Él se presentó como Scout y sería nuevo integrante del club de música. Este le preguntó lo básico de las normas a Jackie y estuvieron un buen rato mientras compartían sus conocimientos en música y qué tantos instrumentos tocaban, y este le comentó que le gustaba mucho la guitarra, por lo que siempre estaba en busca de aprender más. Así mismo, elogió a Jackie y le dijo que no había visto a nadie dominar tanto un instrumento tan complicado, que de seguro sus familiares o amigos estarían orgullosos, cosa que hizo que ella se apagara de momento y le contara a Scout que tenía oculto eso de su familia, explicándole todo mientras estaban sentados en un espacio del club de música.

Luego de una larga charla que duró más de lo esperado, ambos chicos habían conectado de una forma casi que mágica y Scout le había prometido ser su confidente y apoyarla en lo que fuera a Jackie para que practicara y fuera cada vez mejor, por lo que las semanas pasaron y ella estaba más tiempo en el club de música. Sentía que estaba más animada, pues le gustaba la idea de que pudiera tener a un amigo al que no tuviera que ocultar nada o hacer creer algo diferente a lo que le gustaba. Sin embargo, Brooks estaba notando más distanciamiento en Jackie y pensaba erróneamente que tal vez él estaba haciendo algo que a su hermana no le gustaba y, mientras más trataba de acercarse, ella más se alejaba, sin saber que era el miedo a ser juzgada por él lo que hacía que ella se cerrara.

Pasado algún tiempo, el instituto organizó una pequeña presentación para atraer a nuevos talentos y así dar una demostración de los que ya estaban allí. Scout le comentó a Jackie que por qué no se daba a conocer, pues él sabía y estaba seguro de que su melodía era la correcta para que todos vieran lo grandiosa que era, y en un principio estuvo negada a participar; sin embargo, a varias insistencias por todo el grupo del club, terminó cediendo, aunque algo nerviosa de hacerlo. Pasaron los días con todos los preparativos y, aunque los ensayos eran muy fluidos, Jackie estaba cada vez más nerviosa y tanto Scout lo notaba en el club como Brooks en casa; sentía que su hermana estaba tensa y en medio de una práctica decidió confrontarla para saber qué estaba pasando.

Él le preguntó directamente qué pasaba y que no le mintiera; así mismo le dijo que si él era el culpable, lo perdonara, por lo que luego de mucha insistencia, ella le confesó todo: el miedo a su rechazo y el temor a ser juzgada por su familia. Brooks la escuchó atentamente y, posterior a eso, sin dar alguna palabra, la abrazó fuerte por un buen rato. Él le explicó que no debería sentirse así, que no hay exigencia alguna con lo que debería hacer o lo que debería gustarle; por el contrario, debería estar orgullosa de poder ser quien es, con sus talentos y destrezas, sin temor a nada, y así mismo le prometió ir a verla en su presentación.

Llegó el día de la presentación y Jackie temblaba de nervios, pues, fuera de todo temor, era su primera presentación, por lo que estaba sin saber cómo calmarse, por lo que, viendo esto, Scout, sin pensar, la abrazó, haciendo que fuera un momento cálido y relajante para ambos, sin duda lo que Jackie necesitaba, pues luego de esto su presentación fue tan impecable que no solo atrajo personas a unirse al club de música, sino que también muchos quedaron maravillados con su talento, haciendo eco de este para que se diera a conocer por muchos.

Y entre todos, su hermano Brooks, conmovido hasta las lágrimas, estaba completamente sorprendido, pues era la primera vez que veía a su hermana tan feliz mientras era ella misma tocando su música. Finalizada toda la presentación, este felicitó a su hermana dándole un ramo de rosas y mostrándole que no solo él estaba allí, pues había llamado a sus padres para que vieran el talento de Jackie, quien temerosa se acercó a ellos, recibiendo felicitaciones y diciéndole lo orgullosa que estaban de ella, cosa que hizo que esos miedos y temores desaparecieran por completo y entre lágrimas entendiera que ella misma estaba poniendo esas barreras. Así mismo les presentó a Scout a su familia como aquel amigo que la había ayudado a animarse más y juntos fueron a celebrar el día y más aún las nuevas cosas que vendrían para Jackie con su gran talento.

Jackie had put off making her musical taste public. Since she was a child, she had her brother Brooks, who was always supportive and her accomplice. Together, they would get into mischief in their grandfather's music studio, running around and playing endlessly with the instruments, even making them playfully. This, of course, years ago, had led Brooks to focus on music and become very agile on the keyboard. He knew his melodies could bring joy to his sister, and she was always proud of him. So the family hoped that Jackie would also show some musical talent and taste at some point.

The thing was, she didn't want her family to see what her musical taste was. Although she did really like instruments and used to play some with her brother to help him practice or compose, what Jackie really liked was one that wasn't very common in her family—not to mention that almost no one played it or performed it well. She feared that if she shared it with her family, they would judge her and, consequently, she wouldn't be seen in the same way and perhaps lose the affection she treasured so much.

This indecision kept Jackie in a low mood and, without realizing it, had her gradually distancing herself from everyone. Her brother Brooks began to notice that she wasn't the same when she helped him practice. She felt empty, lacking that characteristic spark, and when he tried to talk to her, she managed to change the subject and walk away. Jackie had a special place in her high school's music club, where she would play her favorite instrument with great energy, as she wasn't judged at all while she was within those four walls playing and expressing all her love for music. One afternoon, while she was immersed in her music, she noticed a young man staring at her. After she finished playing, he gently clapped and told her what a beautiful melody he had just heard.

He introduced himself as Scout and would be a new member of the music club. He asked Jackie the basic rules, and they spent a good time sharing their musical knowledge and the many instruments they played. He told her he really liked the guitar and was always looking to learn more. He also praised Jackie and told her he'd never seen anyone so proficient in such a complicated instrument, and that her family and friends would surely be proud. This caused her to shut down for a moment and tell Scout she'd kept this from her family, explaining everything while they sat in a corner of the music club.

After a long conversation that lasted longer than expected, the two boys connected in an almost magical way, and Scout had promised to be her confidant and support Jackie in any way she could to help her practice and become better. As the weeks went by, she spent more time in the music club. She felt more encouraged, as she liked the idea of having a friend she didn't have to hide anything from or make believe something different from what she liked. However, Brooks was noticing more distance in Jackie and mistakenly thought that maybe he was doing something that his sister didn't like, and the more he tried to get closer, the more she withdrew, unaware that it was the fear of being judged by him that was causing her to shut down.

After some time, the school organized a small presentation to attract new talent and showcase the talent already there. Scout asked Jackie why she didn't introduce herself, as he knew and was sure her melody was the right one for everyone to see how great it was. At first, she refused to participate. However, after repeated insistence from the entire club group, she eventually gave in, although somewhat nervous about doing so. Days went by with all the preparations, and although the rehearsals were going very smoothly, Jackie grew increasingly nervous, and Scout noticed it at the club as well as Brooks at home. She sensed her sister was tense, and in the middle of practice, she decided to confront her to find out what was going on.

He asked her directly what was wrong and told her not to lie to him. He also told her that if he was the one at fault, she should forgive him. So, after much insistence, she confessed everything: her fear of being rejected and her fear of being judged by her family. Brooks listened attentively and, afterward, without saying a word, hugged her tightly for a long time. He explained that she shouldn't feel that way, that there are no demands on what she should do or what she should like; on the contrary, she should be proud of being who she is, with her talents and skills, without fear. He also promised to go see her perform.

The day of the performance arrived, and Jackie was shaking with nerves. Beyond all fear, it was her first performance, so she didn't know how to calm down. Seeing this, Scout, without thinking, hugged her, making it a warm and relaxing moment for both of them. It was undoubtedly what Jackie needed. Afterward, her performance was so impeccable that it not only attracted people to join the music club, but many were also amazed by her talent, spreading the word so that it could be known by many.

And among them all, her brother Brooks, moved to tears, was completely surprised, as it was the first time he saw his sister so happy while she was herself playing her music. After the entire presentation, he congratulated his sister by giving her a bouquet of roses and showing her that he wasn't the only one there, as he had called their parents to see Jackie's talent. Jackie fearfully approached them, receiving congratulations and telling her how proud they were of her, which made those fears and anxieties disappear completely and through tears she understood that she herself was putting up those barriers. She also introduced Scout to her family as the friend who had helped her to be more encouraged and together they went to celebrate the day and even more so the new things that would come for Jackie with her great talent.
