Another year making the traditional hallacas at my grandmother's house [ENG/ESP]

Hello everyone. Like every year, my family gets together to make traditional hallacas at my grandmother's house. Since we're a small family, it's not customary to make them ourselves; we did it some years, but we've come to much prefer making them together as a family, since it's often more fun. This is one of the moments we cherish most during the season, and it's especially important to see who's truly part of the family.

Hola a todos. Como cada año, en mi familia nos reunimos para hacer las tradicionales hallacas en casa de mi abuela. Al ser una familia pequeña, en mi casa no es costumbre que se hagan; en algunos años hicimos, pero al final preferimos mucho más hacerlo con todos reunidos, ya que incluso llega a ser más divertido, siendo este uno de los momentos que más llegamos a atesorar de la temporada y en especial el que marca quiénes realmente están en la familia.

This year, unlike last year, we arrived earlier and were able to help with one of the first steps: preparing the stew. We already had everything to start chopping and cooking; we just needed to divide up the tasks. My uncles had gone out early to gather the firewood needed for the stove, because yes, we do everything over the fire. Some of my uncles and my aunt had arranged and extended the usual stove, making a suitable space with mud and a support so that those of us who are short wouldn't strain our backs. With this, they began cooking the chicken, beef, and pork.

Para este año, a diferencia del anterior, llegamos más temprano y pudimos colaborar con uno de los primeros pasos, que es la preparación del guiso. Ya teníamos todo para comenzar a picar y cocer; solo faltaba dividirnos en las actividades. Mis tíos habían salido temprano a buscar la leña necesaria para el fogón, porque sí, nosotros lo hacemos todo en el fogón, y justamente entre algunos tíos y mi tía habían acomodado y extendido lo que era el fogón habitual, haciendo con barro y un soporte un espacio adecuado para que a los que somos bajitos no nos molestara la espalda, porque ya con esto se comenzó con la cocción del pollo, carne y cochino respectivo.

At the same time, we cleaned the seasonings, like the chili peppers (some of which were very spicy), onions, scallions, bell peppers, and even cauliflower (because yes, folks, these hallacas, at my aunt's insistence, have a little cauliflower in them). This year I joined in the chopping of seasonings, and I must say, it was fun. While we were chopping, we'd snack on raisins or olives, and my grandmother, my sister, and I would gossip while my aunt and my mother chopped the bacon and shredded the chicken. My sister and I were joking about how this year I'd been promoted and wasn't in charge of cleaning the leaves or adding the oil; instead, we delegated that task to my oldest uncle as punishment for not doing anything last year.

A la par limpiamos los aliños como el ají (que algunos estaban muy picosos), las cebollas, el cebollín, pimentón e incluso coliflor (porque sí, señores, a estas hallacas, por gusto de mi tía, se les coloca un poquito de coliflor). Este año me uní a lo que es el picar aliños y, es algo que debo decir, estuvo divertido, ya que entre tanto picar nos echábamos alguna pasita o aceituna para comer y estábamos mi abuela, mi hermana y yo allí echando chisme mientras mi tía y mi mamá se encargaban de picar el tocino y desmechar el pollo. Con mi hermana estuvimos bochinchando con el hecho de que este año había subido de rango y no estaba encargada de limpiar las hojas ni ponerles el aceite; por el contrario, le delegamos esa función al mayor de mis tíos como castigo por no hacer nada el año pasado.

After that, the large table was brought out so we could organize ourselves better, and once the stew was ready and approved, my aunt helped my uncle with the remaining leaves and proceeded to make the dough. I must say that this year we all took on a lot of different roles; you could say we did a little bit of everything, which was exciting for everyone. And when everything was ready, everyone took their turn: my grandmother, my mother, and my aunt with the hallacas; one of my uncles kept an eye out for flies and made sure nothing was forgotten; and me with my indispensable role every year, which is tying them (and I must say that I'm one of the few in the family who knows how to tie them properly and never misses a hallaca while cooking).

Luego de eso, se sacó la gran mesa para que así nos pudiéramos organizar mejor y, luego de que el guiso estuvo listo y obtuvo el aprobado, mi tía ayudó a mi tío con lo que restaba de las hojas y procedió a encargarse de hacer la masa. Para esto debo decir que este año estuvimos rodando mucho en lo que son funciones; se puede decir que hicimos de todo un poco, lo cual fue emocionante para cada uno. Y cuando todos los elementos estuvieron listos, cada uno agarró su función: mi abuela, mi mamá y mi tía con lo que era la hallaca; uno de mis tíos estaba pendiente de moscas o que no se olvidara nada, y yo en mi función indispensable de cada año, la cual es amarrar (lo cual debo decir que de la familia soy de las únicas que sabe amarrar y que no se le escapa ninguna hallaca al cocinar).

After a good while tying the hallacas and snacking on raisins and other treats, we had a visitor. It was a friend of my sister's; they've known each other for almost 10 years, and he treats my mom like she's his own. He was shy at first, and we were too, since it's rare for us to have anyone over. However, he joined in really well and tied the hallacas with me, which was fun. We joked and chatted, and then we did the same with the Christmas buns, which are a mixture of ingredients and leftover dough (surprisingly, there were more of them than hallacas). It was a lot of fun, with the double entendres, while he was tying them.

Luego de un buen rato amarrando y que estuvieras tomando pasitas y una que otra cosa para comer por travesura, tuvimos una visita, la cual era un amigo de mi hermana, los cuales tienen tanta amistad que ya van para 10 años conociéndose y que trata a mi mamá como si también fuera suya. Estaba en un principio tímido y nosotros también porque es raro que llevemos a alguien a la casa; sin embargo, se integró muy bien y estuvo amarrando hallacas conmigo, lo cual fue divertido y en lo que bromeábamos y charlábamos, y así mismo luego con lo que son los bollitos navideños, los cuales son la mezcla de los ingredientes y masa sobrante (que sorprendentemente salieron más que las hallacas). Pero fue muy divertido un rato de doble sentido mientras se amarraba.

Finally, while we rested and chatted with family members in Spain who were missing us, it was time to enjoy what was, for many of us in the family, the first hallaca of the year. After all the work involved in making it, it was more than deserved and, indeed, delicious. It was a day of hard work, but filled with many memories. Al final de todo, y mientras descansábamos y hablábamos con familiares que estaban en España y que se extrañaban, llegó el momento de degustar lo que fue para muchos de nosotros en la familia la primera hallaca del año, la cual, luego de todo el proceso de elaboración, fue más que merecido y, en efecto, estuvo deliciosa. Fue un día de mucho trabajo, pero con bastantes recuerdos.
