The art of goldsmithing [eng/spa]
One of the art forms I enjoy most is goldsmithing, and I think most girls feel the same way. This art involves working with metals to create jewelry and decorative items. That's why today I'm sharing my first visit to the Museum of Goldsmithing, located on Obispo Street, which runs through the center of Old Havana.
This house museum is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary and houses a collection of pieces that stand out for their extreme level of detail and excellent metalwork. In addition, the building's location is privileged because it is very close to Calle de Madera, the only street of its kind in the entire country.
During my tour of the museum, I learned that this place, like most of the buildings located in the historic center, was restored by the city's Office of the Historian. But the most interesting thing was to learn that more than two centuries ago, the building was the home and workshop of silversmith Gregorio Tabares, so there is no doubt that it was a wise decision to choose this very site for a museum related to goldsmithing. The house is characterized by its colonial-style architectural design.
Currently, only the ground floor of the museum is open to the public. One of my favorite collections was the pocket watches with chains, which included pieces made from a wide variety of materials: gold, steel, crystal, silver, and nickel silver. My imagination ran wild as I imagined how elegant they must have been to their owners in another era.
This visit brought back wonderful memories, because it reminded me of my childhood, when we used to go on vacation to my grandparents' country house, and a family friend who was a goldsmith lived very close by. One of my aunts always said that this is an art that must be inherited from other generations, that these kinds of skills are in people's genes.
Returning to the museum, I should mention that there is also a collection of decorative clocks on display, which, in addition to their practical purpose, are exquisite ornaments of the finest taste.
The silver ashtrays and lighters in the museum's display cases are also very impressive. These share space with some very delicate braziersbraziers, which are containers where some type of fuel is placed so that the embers burn, creating the sensation of higher temperatures.
There are also pieces dedicated to decorating the female figure, including earrings and hairpins made of gold, silver, and red and black enamel pearls.
For the gentlemen of the house, there is also a collection of walking sticks that were used in the 19th and 20th centuries. And as if they were waiting to be part of the cast of a medieval film, several sabers are on display, characterized by their meticulous workmanship on the hilts.
