Cathedral Square, the place where culture, heritage and architecture converge [eng/spa]
Old Havana is made up of some squares, which have the peculiarity of bringing together very interesting places. One of them is the popular Cathedral Square, which undoubtedly, one of its main attractions is its buildings, which show a fascinating architectural design. This exhibits the most uniform design of the four colonial squares that adorn the historic center.
In its beginnings, this square was known as the "square of the swamp", because in its central point there used to be a swamp, which years later was drained. Fortunately, later the construction of the church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed, and since then its name was changed to the one we know today: Cathedral Square.
In my opinion, the most impressive façade of the square is that of the Holy Metropolitan Church Cathedral. This catholic temple is part of the list of places declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. It was a pity that at the time of my visit it was closed, because I would have loved to show you its amazing interior design. A lot of people visit the square every day, just to get inside this place.
From this sanctuary you can also see the Catedral Hotel, which is an excellent lodging option if you want to wake up at dawn with a view of the cathedral.
During the colonial period, the square was home to some of Havana's most aristocratic families. One of them was the Palace of the Marquis of Arcos, which stands out for its huge entrance that adjoins Mercaderes Street.
Currently, this building is an integrating space, opening its doors as a literary lyceum. It houses a literary café, a library and a media library.
Another of the buildings that make up the square is the old house of Don Luis Chacón, now the Museum of Colonial Art. I have visited this site on many occasions, and I never tire of touring it, so I recommend a visit with the guidance of a specialized guide. I like the peculiarity of its facade, which does not have the large portals full of columns that were common at that time.
During my tour I could see, through one of its large open gates, a quitrin, which for those who do not know it, I tell you that it is a single-axle carriage that is pulled by horses. This type of transport was very common in colonial times, and seeing it so close makes you imagine its elegant gait in the middle of all the cobblestone streets.
In one of the alleys of the square is located the Experimental Graphic Workshop, which has the peculiarity of bringing together artists, graphic designers and photographers who like graphics and the search for innovation in the ways of doing. In its adjoining building opens its doors the art gallery Victor Manuel.
There is also a restaurant that offers, among other options, Creole food; and also in the parallel street is located the internationally known Bodeguita del Medio.
An interesting element of the square is that in it you can find people who practice Afro-Cuban religions. So I end with these photos of a visitor who wants to know his fortune.

Thank you very much @itzcyrene, I'm glad you enjoy the charm of this site
