I always wondered why this charming place in Havana is known as Loma del Angel (Angel Hill). The first time one of my friends invited me to this space, I was curious just to hear its name, and my expectations were satisfied as soon as I had the chance to visit it.

Siempre me pregunté por qué este sitio tan encantador de La Habana es conocido como la Loma del Ángel. La primera vez que uno de mis amigos me invitó a este espacio, quedé con curiosidad solo de escuchar su nombre, y mis expectativas fueron satisfechas en cuanto tuve la oportunidad de visitarlo.

The first thing is that if you get to this small square using Compostela Street as an access road, you will notice that it is exactly in an elevated area, which justifies that it is known by the term: hill. I really liked having to climb this small hill, since most of the city of Havana is characterized by flat terrain, so a change of perspective makes a difference.
Already at the top, the first thing that captures the attention is the Holy Guardian Angel church, which has a facade with a fascinating architecture. So the name of this building ends up clarifying the reason for the name of the place.

Lo primero es que si llegas hasta esta pequeña plaza utilizando como vía de acceso la calle Compostela, podrás observar que exactamente, queda en una zona elevada, lo que justifica que sea conocido con el término: loma. A mí me gustó muchísimo tener que ascender por esta pequeña escalada, pues la mayor parte de la ciudad de La Habana se caracteriza por tener terrenos llanos, así que un cambio de perspectiva marca una diferencia.
Ya en la cima, lo primero que capta la atención es la iglesia Santo Ángel Custodio, que tiene una fachada con una arquitectura fascinante. Así que el nombre de esta edificación termina por aclarar el por qué del nombre del lugar.

This temple, which belongs to the Catholic religion, treasures a very beautiful history. Before becoming the impressive building it is today, it was a small chapel founded by Franciscan monks. Years later, its structure was given greater strength and durability, and this impressive work was dedicated to the Holy Guardian Angel, who was considered the protector of the parish where it was located.
I tell you that this building has such an enormous historical and patrimonial value, that even UNESCO has collaborated in the conservation work that has been undertaken to preserve the brilliance of this site.
An important fact that keeps this church was the reception of the baptism of the National Hero of Cuba, José Martí, when he was just a child. This event, which is even marked on a bronze plaque at the entrance, makes it a place to visit for those who wish to get closer to the figure of this historical figure.

Este templo, que pertenece a la religión católica, atesora una historia muy linda. Antes de ser el impresionante inmueble que es hoy, fue una pequeña capilla fundada por los monjes franciscanos. Años más tarde, a su estructura se le fue otorgando una mayor fortaleza y durabilidad, y se dedicó esta impresionante obra al Santo Ángel Custodio, que era considerado el protector de la parroquia donde estaba enclavada.
Les cuento que esta edificación tiene un valor histórico y patrimonial tan enorme, que incluso la UNESCO ha colaborado en los trabajos de conservación que se han acometido para conservar el brillo de este sitio.
Un hecho importante que guarda esta iglesia lo fue la acogida del bautizo del Héroe Nacional de Cuba, José Martí, cuando apenas era un niño. Este suceso, que incluso está señalado en una placa de bronce que se encuentra en su entrada, la convierte en un lugar de visita para las personas que desean acercarse más a la figura de este personaje histórico.

But the church holds another crucial fact. And it is that the novel Cecilia Valdés, which is one of the most important texts of national literature, takes place in Holy Guardian Angel. This explains the beautiful bronze sculpture, which represents the figure of Cecilia, its main character, who greets you with restless eyes at the entrance of the temple.
This literary text, which masterfully describes the society of the time, was written by novelist Cirilo Villaverde, who also has a bronze sculpture in the square, which is located just in front of the sidewalk in front of the sculpture of Cecilia. You can tell me what you think, but I have the impression that the writer is watching the beautiful Havana mulatto all the time.

Pero la iglesia guarda otro dato crucial. Y es que la novela Cecilia Valdés, que es uno de los textos más importantes de la literatura nacional, se desarrolla en Santo Ángel Custodio. Esto explica la hermosa escultura de bronce, que representa la figura de Cecilia, su personaje principal, que te recibe con ojos inquietos a la entrada del templo.
Este texto literario, que describe de forma magistral la sociedad de la época, fue escrito por el novelista Cirilo Villaverde, quien también tiene una escultura de bronce en la plaza, la cual está ubicada justo en la acera frontal de la escultura de Cecilia. Ya ustedes me contarán qué les parece, pero a mí me da la impresión de que el escritor observa todo el tiempo a la hermosa mulata habanera.

The San Pablo Evangelization Center is located on the Angel Hill, as well as the house where Enrique Garcia Cabrera lived, who is considered one of the pioneers of advertising and editorial drawing in Cuba.
The place is surrounded by several gastronomic establishments, including the renowned Angel Coffee. In addition, in this square is located the hotel of the same name, which undoubtedly offers a privileged view.

En la Loma del Ángel se localiza el centro de evangelización San Pablo, además de la vivienda donde viviera Enrique García Cabrera, quien es considerado uno de los pioneros del dibujo publicitario y editorial en Cuba.
El lugar está circundado por varios establecimientos gastronómicos, incluyendo el reconocido Café del Ángel. Además, en esta plaza se ubica el hotel del mismo nombre, que sin dudas ofrece una vista privilegiada.
