A garden dedicated to Africa [eng/spa]

Green and White Modern Open Trip Facebook Post_20250825_192525_0000.png

Right on Obra Pía Street, which is part of the fabric of Old Havana, is located the Africa House Museum. This is a space dedicated to preserving and defending the immense cultural heritage of African roots. But despite all the historical and artistic value that surrounds this place, today I will not share what its exhibition halls show, but its impressive garden, which is not only characterized by lush vegetation, but also by the art it displays.
This place was recently renovated, and as has always been usual, this area of the building, hosts various cultural activities and exchange, workshops and various events.

Of the whole place, what impressed me the most was to see the replica of a Cuban trapiche, made of Galician pine wood. For those of you who don't know it, a trapiche is a device used to press sugar cane and extract its juice. See the sugar canes next to it? We couldn't help ourselves, my friend @lileisabel and I, to take some by putting the trapiche to work!!!!
In this place there are planted Indian plantain and coffee. Generally speaking, in African traditions, coffee has a spiritual meaning, because besides awakening the senses in a physical way, it is also considered to provide a connection on other levels. With the planting of this grain, a tribute is paid to ancestral ceremonies such as the coffee ritual, which is practiced in many of the nations that make up the African continent.

At the entrance of the place, there are some images of masks that are representative of the Republic of Cameroon, Angola and Mali. In my tour of the house I learned that in Africa, the meaning of the masks goes beyond covering the face, reaching to everything that is used to cover the body. A ceremonial mask is represented, which has incrustations of shells that were used as coins; and the Mukixi mask, which embodies what is considered the first mythical woman.

Also adorning the site is an impressive bronze sculpture by the outstanding Cuban artist Alberto Lezcay. This work is titled the Return of Aponte, and it entails a fascinating mysticism. It shows the figure of a man raising his head in his hands, taking into account that he died unjustly hanged.
José Antonio Aponte was considered a symbol of rebellion in his time, and organized one of the largest rebellions in defense of the slaves, which was known as the Aponte Conspiracy.

This place also exhibits paintings with fascinating landscapes: one of them depicts the Axum Obelisk, which is located in Ethiopia and was built in granite more than a millennium ago. Another of the paintings shows a landscape with baobabs, which is considered a sacred tree by different cultures of this region, due to its strength and longevity.

Undoubtedly, this is a space that shows, in different ways, the wonders that Africa treasures, and how impressive this culture is.

The masks, the Return of Aponte sculpture, and the striking paintings all seem to bring African history and culture vividly to life. A space where culture, memory, and creativity all come together beautifully.
