A castle showing Havana [eng/spa]

Today I invite you to visit one of the most impressive castles in Havana, located in Loma de Soto. I am talking about the Santo Domingo de Atarés Castle museum, which was built during the Spanish domination of the island, during the colonial period, as part of the fortresses that were part of the city's protection system in the 18th century. At that time, the San Carlos de la Cabaña Castle and the Prince Castle were also erected; therefore, I also recommend a visit to these two buildings to fully understand the basis of this defensive system.
From the entrance to the place the tour begins to be exciting. When you start ascending the slope that leads to the castle, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city, comparable to very few other points in Havana. Below this area is the old cemetery of Atarés, which was laid out during the intense cholera epidemic that the city faced, and even there, excavations are currently being carried out.

Hoy los invito a conocer uno de los castillos más impresionantes que atesora La Habana, que se ubica en la Loma de Soto. Les hablo del museo Castillo de Santo Domingo de Atarés, el cual se construyó por la dominación española de la isla, durante la etapa de colonia, como parte de las fortalezas que integraban el sistema de protección de la ciudad en el siglo XVIII. En aquel entonces, se erigió también el Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabaña y el Castillo del Príncipe; por lo cual recomiendo también una visita turística a estas dos edificaciones para entender del todo las bases de este sistema defensivo.
Desde la entrada al lugar el recorrido comienza a ser apasionante. Cuando se comienza a ascender por la pendiente de que dirige hacia el castillo, se puede disfrutar de una fantástica vista de la ciudad, comparable con muy pocos otros puntos de La Habana. Debajo de esta área se ubica el antiguo cementerio de Atarés, el cual se dispuso durante la intensa epidemia de cólera que enfrentó la ciudad, e incluso allí, actualmente se realizan procesos de excavaciones.

But before I continue sharing my experience, I would like to tell you that this building, although it is identified with the term "castle", it is not really a castle, because it does not have the amount of batteries necessary for this type of construction. The correct way to call it would be military fortress, but I must admit that in my opinion, its imposing architecture makes it look exactly like a castle.
Santo Domingo de Atarés was the work of the engineer Silvestre Abarca, who had the support of the engineer Agustín Crame, also of Belgian origin.
Although it never faced any armed action, the place was used for military purposes until 2012; and then began the process of intervention of the Office of the Historian of the city to rehabilitate the place.
One of the elements that I enjoyed most about the castle was to see the state of conservation of its drawbridge, which seemed to me to be taken out of a movie of the feudal era; and evidently at that stage it was used as another means of protection.

Pero antes de continuar compartiendo mi experiencia les cuento que esta edificación, aunque se identifica con el término de "castillo", realmente no lo es, pues no posee la cantidad de baterías necesarias para este tipo de construcción. La forma correcta de llamarla sería fortaleza militar, pero debo admitir que en mi opinión, su imponente arquitectura la hace lucir exactamente como un castillo.
Santo Domingo de Atarés fue una obra del ingeniero Silvestre Abarca, que contó con el apoyo del también ingeniero Agustín Crame, el cual era de origen belga.
Aunque nunca enfrentó ninguna acción armada, el lugar fue usado con fines militares hasta el año 2012; y posteriormente comenzó el proceso de intervención de la Oficina del Historiador de la ciudad para rehabilitar el lugar.
Una de los elementos que más disfruté del castillo fue ver el estado de conservación de su puente levadizo, el cual me pareció sacado de una película de la época feudal; y evidentemente en aquella etapa se usó como otro medio de protección.

In the center of the building is the parade ground. In one of the lateral doors that can be seen from this area, there is an access to a room with a model of the castle. It offers a very good view of the entire plant, and allows to fully appreciate the military values of this building.

En el centro de la edificación se ubica la plaza de armas. En una de las puertas laterales que se ven desde esa zona, se encuentra el acceso a una sala que posee la maqueta del castillo. Es muy buena la vista que ofrece de toda la planta, y permite apreciar totalmente los valores militares de esta edificación.

The castle has other areas, but among the most interesting, from my point of view, is the warehouse of the powder magazine. In this space artillery projectiles that were discovered in Loma de Soto itself are exhibited.

El castillo posee otras áreas, pero entre las más interesantes, desde mi punto de vista, se encuentra el almacén del polvorín. En este espacio se exhiben proyectiles de artillería que fueron descubiertos en la propia Loma de Soto.

Remember at the beginning of the post I told you about the beautiful views that can be seen on the way up to the castle? Well, it is not the only place in Atarés that has that privilege. Its rooftop also has that attraction. From there you can see its canyons, which have names. But in addition, in each corner there is a binoculars, which shows the fullness and beauty of Havana.

¿Recuerdan que al inicio del post les dije de las hermosas vistas que se observan en el camino de ascenso hasta el castillo? Pues no es el único lugar de Atarés que tiene ese privilegio. Su azotea también es tiene ese atractivo. Desde ahí se pueden observar sus cañones, los cuales tienen nombres. Pero además, en cada esquina se ubica un prismático, que muestra la plenitud y hermosura de La Habana.
