Automatic voting has been a topic of discussion on Hive for years. Some people use it very actively and hardly ever vote manually. Others prefer to vote manually all the time. As someone who has been on Hive for over three years, I have used manual voting 99% of the time. The remaining 1% is due to my involvement in vote trails supporting Hive Gaming and Turkish accounts. This continued until I went on my honeymoon after getting married.

First, let's talk about what automatic voting is. Automatic voting allows you to vote for selected users at a percentage of your choice by logging into the hive.vote site. If you wish, you can set these users to be voted on once a week or 100 times a week. I am aware that this is not the only method. Some people on Hive use special algorithms to vote for people. If you have a knack for coding, you can create wonders.
Since I won't be able to follow Hive on my phone during my honeymoon, I decided to try automatic voting. When selecting people for automatic voting, I chose those whose posts I have enjoyed reading for years and who I believe add value to Hive. The results were much better than I expected. Over the course of about 10 days, my voting power only reached 100% once. I think the reason for this was that the writers I set up for automatic voting were sharing fewer posts. Sometimes, when I had the time, I would log into Hive for a few minutes, check the votes, and everything was fine. Currently, I have more time to dedicate to Hive and have turned off most of the automatic voting, but if there is a one-month period where I think I won't be able to dedicate time to Hive, I will use automatic voting with peace of mind. I think this is much more reasonable than letting my voting power sit idle.
Of course, I’m aware that this carries risks. Someone you trust could suddenly start sharing shitposts, and you might be helping them farm without even realizing it. That's precisely why I canceled automatic voting and went back to manual voting. I'll continue to vote for the people I've been following up to this point, and I'll also try to find undiscovered gems on Hive.

I think auto-votes sometimes help you control your VP, like whenever I travel I set my vote with a curation trail so I can control my VP. Sometimes I log into my account for a few seconds while traveling and curate friends in my feed whose content I like and I read their daily blogs.
That's what I do too. But instead I set auto votes for my friends, not joining curation trails
I vote manually. In the past I followed some curation trails but I stopped following them because thanks to them I upvoted a few of of my own posts. Also I think that autovote can be both good and bad. I am getting some votes that are probably autovotes. I understand that it is time efficient. Still autovotes normally mean that I only get a vote and no comment so that is a bit disappointing. So I like manual votes more.

Believe it or not, I do have setup automatic upvotes, but only if my voting mana goes over 98%, which happens very, very rarely... 😃 So, the automatic upvotes don't get triggered seldom, and I do most of my curation manually... Call me old-fashioned, but I like to check out what my friends are creating and to reward them accordingly...
I know that everyone can do whatever they want, but I do appreciate when people are doing manual curation, as it shows the "human touch" which is important on the social media platform... and HIVE is one!
The human touch makes everything better, man. I also prefer manual curation, but as I mentioned above, it can be very difficult in some cases. There were times when I didn't log into Hive for 3-4 days. On days like that, automatic votes prevented my voting power from going to waste.
I'm not sure if 98% is a good choice; maybe 96% would be better because 98 is very close to 100. If no one shares a post at that time, your voting power could go to waste. Though, you might have set something up to address that. For example, voting for a user you normally wouldn't vote for after 12 hours.
Yeah, I added a lot of accounts to follow, so it hits 100% very rarely... But, even if it happens, it's not the end of the world... 😃 I don't know why I was freaking out so much when that happened in the past... 🤣

But if to talk seriously I don't see something bad in it. Also I think people should check regularly for whom they set autovote or on which curation trail. Because from time to time author can change theme of posts and reader can think that it not deserves his vote. Or trail can change rules.
In my case I use auto votes but as so as I set it at high percentage more than 70 percents(I think) I vote manually.
Also as it said by others it's good way to use your hp when you not online for a long time.

Exactly man. It takes so much time 😂 First wedding was at 19th second one at 26th July and then we went on our honeymoon. That's why it took so much time.
Knowing some traditions I can imagine how it was emotional and took forces))
Fortunately in my case first day was officiall ceremony and on the second day it was just outdoor event when we could relax a little bit and atmosphere was more unofficial))

I am 100% manual voting, I love that, in fact I wish I had more HP to make it more fun 😅 but sometimes I only have time to check my communities and my good friends like you can be left out for many days. It's unintentional, and that's the downside of not having automatic voting. I think I've only done it when I go on a trip, but it's only for a couple of days and then I go back to manual voting...
That's exactly what I do. Although I sometimes need automatic voting, I generally prefer manual voting and will continue to do so.
The way I look at Auto-voting on Hive is that is has way more positives than negatives and without it, Hive would likely spiral down way more.
To start, in order to be able to actually use Auto-Voting in a meaningful way, your vote actually needs to be worth something so it only is available for those who are invested in the platform. The reality also is that most people simply don't have time to each day browe Hive to check a bunch of posts most of the time having to plow through a bunch of garbage and manually do at least 10 Upvotes. Auto-Upvotes kind of work in a way like Patreon. If you generally like the content someone puts out and you see the wallet activity is healthy for the Hive Ecosystem, it's very fair to just put in an Auto-vote. As a creator it's also motivating and encouraging to know that your post will get at least a certain post payout without the need to often get lucky to be picked up by one of the curation projects or the occasional whale vote. Nothing worse than putting a ton of effort in just to see it getting only a couple votes and this happens quite often I would say on Hive.
The main downside I would say is that it brings about the danger of lazy content which is made only to capitulize on the auto-upvotes. It also doesn't really help content discovery or putting what's the best in trending.
Personally I have a list of accounts that are on auto-upvote who all either need to bring content that I enjoy, be good for the Hive ecosystem, support me. This while each day I do some manual curation (often upvoting comments & engagement that my posts get) to make sure my Voting Power stays below 100%. It's a good mix of auto & manual curation while it keeps the time requirement down.
I agree with you. If there are people you think add value to Hive, you can set up automatic votes for them. Of course, you need to check their posts from time to time. You have to be careful about shitposts and similar things. I prefer manual voting, but if I have to stay away from Hive for a while, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
I don't follow any voting trails and 100% of my voting is done manually. Occasionally my VP reaches 100%, but usually I can stay current.
