Kingdom: Ashin of the North Movie Review [EN-TR]
I mentioned recently that I have a particular interest in Korean films, and I generally enjoyed most of the films I watched. Today, I'll share my thoughts on a film I didn't like among these films: Kingdom: Ashin of the North.
The film is currently available on Netflix, and at 90 minutes, it's quite short. Its genres are action, drama, and fantasy. There are also a few scary scenes in the film.
From this point on, you will see minor spoilers, but these will not prevent you from enjoying the film. At the beginning of the film, you see people living happily in a village. These are people living in a border village of the Korean kingdom, but they are not officially recognized, so they are not protected by the state. To achieve this, the village leader does everything he can and demands it from the officials sent by the state. The officials ask him for a favor in return and say they will do everything they can for the village. However, this is not the truth. Soldiers cross the border and find a bunch of dead people in the forest, realizing that the king and his soldiers killed them. This means war with a warrior group beyond the border, but the officials somehow divert the issue and prevent the war. They say that it was not the king but the people of that village who killed them.
Ashin, a young girl living in that village, believes this was done for any reason other than revenge and harbors resentment toward that warrior community. She goes to the soldiers and tells them she will do anything for revenge. Years pass, and Ashin grows up and develops her military skills. She somehow gains access to the archives and learns the truth. She learns that the warrior group was actually justified and attacked the village to take their own revenge, and that it was entirely the fault of the commander who promised the village recognition by the kingdom. First, he kills the commander, then devises a plan to take revenge on the entire kingdom. According to legend, he finds a plant that can even resurrect the dead and feeds it to one of the soldiers. The person who eats the plant turns into a zombie and becomes aggressive. The soldiers spread the virus to each other, and this continues until only one person remains. When only one person remains, Ashin shoots him with a flaming arrow, setting all the zombies on fire and destroying an entire military base. All by feeding poisonous herbs to just one person. I think I've given you enough spoilers, and I won't say any more, but I must admit that the final scene affected me.
Now, let's get to why I didn't like this movie. First of all, a 90-minute film is very short nowadays, and when it's not properly evaluated, none of the elements in the film are properly conveyed. It feels like everything is left half-finished. They try to tell a story, but I'd be lying if I said they succeeded. Nothing happens for almost half the film, and many viewers probably get bored and turn it off before reaching that point. I feel like there are too many gaps in the script. There's no depth, no character development, and since it focuses solely on one main character, there's nothing else to watch besides his struggle. Although the film has an IMDB rating of 6.9, in my opinion, this film deserves a maximum of 5.5 points. I don't know, maybe I don't understand films very well, but I've seen much better films get much lower ratings. I don't think there's anything worth mentioning about the acting either. Only the lead role was in the foreground, and he wasn't bad.
Have you seen this movie? Please share your thoughts in the comments. I love discussing movies, and maybe you saw something different in this film than I did and think it's good.

Hi! Great review, very comprehensive. I haven't seen Kingdom: Ashin of the North, although I've heard a lot about the Kingdom series and it's been on my to-watch list for a while. The premise you describe sounds brutal. I mean, the whole idea of Ashin's revenge using that plant to create zombies seems like an incredibly powerful and dark concept to me.
But I totally understand your criticism. It's such a bummer when a movie with so much potential feels like it's running on half steam. What you say about almost nothing happening during the first half is something that drives me crazy; it completely takes you out of the story. And with 90 minutes, it's a shame they don't take advantage of it to get to the point and develop the plot well. Thanks for the detailed analysis.
I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at this. Maybe I've misinterpreted the film. I value your opinion because I know you're quite active in the community and share film reviews. There are a few other people whose opinions I'm curious about, even if they aren't active these days :)
In my case, I still find Korean stuff a bit off-putting haha 😅. I struggle to make time in my schedule to watch them, but several products I've seen are pretty good. One that I watched and got hooked on was “We Are Dead,” which is about zombies 😃. I really fell in love with that Korean product haha. I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend it
From what I've read, you gave it a pretty low score for not liking the film. You were slaughtered because it reads as boring and heavy despite being a short film, so to speak. When that happens, it's lethal for the product
I haven't seen it, but when Stranger Things comes out and I rent Netflix, I'll keep it in mind to watch because I find themes of war or battles with an atmosphere of ancient or past centuries appealing to watch, especially if there is an attractive political element of conflict. Without reading the critical part, the synopsis convinces me to watch it 😃
If the series you're referring to is All of Us Are Dead, I've watched and finished that series before. It was a series I enjoyed. My wife recommended it. If you're talking about a different series, could you leave the IMDb link in the comments?
I haven't watched that many Korean series or movies. I don't watch them randomly; I usually watch them based on recommendations, so I haven't come across many that I didn't like :P
All of Us are Dead, that one 😃
I like her a lot when she transform 😍, am waiting for the second season, koreans make great zombi products because train to busan is also a very good one
Yeah that was a great one. It was so surprising she was still good even though she transform. I just don't understand why it took so much that second season...
Greetings friend, I wasn't familiar with this film, and it's incredible how many new releases Netflix has to offer, covering so many genres. This one sounds very interesting, especially showcasing the capabilities of women and how they fight and seek revenge, adding that special touch to the entire production. From what you've mentioned, it promises to be quite an adventure.
It promises it but it doesn't complete that promise. In my opinion it's not that good movie but you can watch and share your opinion as well
I'll look for her. I recommend you see the woman in cabin 10.
Thanks a lot I'll take a look to that
