In spite of that cash payment, doesn't HP perform some kind of remote control on your device?

I bought my HP printer years B4 I discovered HIVE & HBD, so I wouldn't know about that.
As for the printer being controlled remotely, I'm not sure of that, either. However, the printers are designed to work only with cartridges made by HP.
