This is what is happening to Bitcoin. If it was just trading actual Bitcoin where it had to move from buyer to seller every time there was a transaction, the price would be 10's of thousands of dollars higher. Of course, there wouldn't be a ton of liquidity and Wall Street probably never would have gotten involved but... This is why you can't have much of a short squeeze on these assets, because the banks will just sell more paper into the move and ultimately overwhelm the buyers until the price comes back down and they can cover. This is a little oversimplified, obviously, but the premise is correct.
