Dear @askrafiki, are Google’s “Gemma” open source models?

If so, what versions of them do exist?

Yes, Google's Gemma models are open source, released under a permissive Apache 2.0 license for research and commercial use. They are lightweight, text-only LLMs built on the same tech as Gemini.

Versions include:

  • Gemma 1: 2B and 7B parameter models (base and instruction-tuned variants)
  • Gemma 2: 2B, 9B, and 27B parameter models (improved efficiency and performance)

For details, check Google's blog: Gemma: Introducing new state-of-the-art open models.
