[Unhealthy] Addiction [Indulgence]

I was teasing the boys (workers) around lunchtime about whether they were being suicidal when I noticed each of them had a bottle of an energy drink that is rumored to be the number one cause of kidney problems among consumers in the region. They laughed guiltily and reasoned that they needed it to level up their energy, especially when work is at its peak.

It is understandable when they consume it occasionally, but it is worrying when they almost cannot function without it. Addiction? Dependency? I'm not sure. But I do know some people who triumphantly avoided it from the moment they decided never to have anything to do with it again, and I laud them for their discipline.

Then it hit me, don't I have a sugar addiction? I indulge in sweets almost every day. Feeling hungry, I munch on half a bar of chocolate. Stressed, I eat a whole. Bored, I take a small bite. No matter my mood, there's ice cream, cookies, chocolate candies, M&Ms, and such.

It's a family influence that started when I was very young, 5 or 6 years old. Mom always had sweets (Choc Nuts, etc) at home. She even adds them whenever she makes pancakes or sticky rice snacks.

And when I started grade school, my best friend had a sweet tooth too, and we often spent our break time at her mother's clinic, where we were given a bar (or two) of Snickers. From then on, my love for sweets stuck with me, even after many years.

Guilty pleasures?

Yes, when they are taken in moderation. But I think it is much more than that in my case. Thankfully, my recent blood chemistry test result indicated my sugar levels are in the normal range. My good habit of drinking enough water every day helped (maybe). But for how long?

It's crazy how we indulge in things, even when we are aware they are detrimental to our health. While I consciously add healthier snacks like fruits (usually pears, bananas, or apples), my consumption of sugary treats is still questionable. Luckily, my metabolism seems to be working normally. I'm not gaining any additional weight, although sometimes, my energy level seems to crash quickly, and I feel tired easily.

Giving up chocolates or sweets isn't an option for me, but I know in my heart that if I truly want to be in the healthy zone, I will have to cut back on my consumption and enjoy them only as an occasional treat, not a daily indulgence. That's a challenge, but I'm willing to take it.

Can pretty much relate to this. I'm a sweet tooth too. But now as an adult, my appetite for sweets changes from time to time. There are days I don't want them, and days that I crave them. My technique is to pair it with a strong espresso so I can only eat half as much.

It really is all about habits is it not?

For me, if there is a bag of salty snacks in the house, it is gonna end up in my face. So, I don’t buy them except occasionally. Same with sugary drinks. I enjoy the hell out of them but never had them at home and now the kids aren’t hooked on them.

Beer however, I have a reputation to uphold here as a Beerologist so I try and limit myself to 1 or 2 per day. Still not a great habit.

It's hard to avoid this kind of habit sis 😁. Like a day is not complete without it.

Same here as the workers do and I am also a regular consumer of energy drink once I have enough money in my pocket to buy such however, make it sure that I have enough solid food intake and have access to drinking water each time I have to gulping into one.

Hmmm addictions are hard things to tackle...

Takes time, practice and discipline 😂

Sometimes maybe you replace one addiction with a slightly healthier addiction 😂✨

Oh! I can relate to those guys 100% haha.. I take energy drink almost everyday and I'd just say that at this point, it's turning into an addiction. I haven't taken it for the past one week, and that's a good sign yh...

Chocolate is also my favourite and I love to take it if I get it for free.

You feel guilty but you are not ready to give up. Hehe. That means you are not ready to leave chocolate in any cost.

I am avoiding energy drinks, they are also revealed to be increasing blood cancer chances... As for sugar I avoid them always, I buy sugar less stuff, except now on holidays a ice cream now and then, there is chocolate without sugar or other artificial sugars but ofc it's more expensive (called Natruly not sure if it's available abroad)

Before I comment, I want to ask you, please, is this whole bowl of chocolate yours? If yes, can you please share it with me, because I am also addicted to chocolate.

Here in Nigeria, thousands of young people can't do without energy drinks and sachet alcohols and they have been so addicted to the extent that some of them are looking very sick but they are still taking it, I don't even know how they will come out of it.
