Cheesy Texts and Warm Hugs

My phone chimed and Derek’s text appeared on the screen.

“Did you smile today?” The text read, and I couldn’t help but smile instantly. I responded with an emoji.

Yeah, that was our little tradition. Derek and I send each other cheesy text messages. We consciously do this to make each other smile. Yesterday’s text was “Did you laugh today?” As cheesy as they usually sounded, I always looked forward to them, they always make my day.

Today was one of those days I wished hadn’t happened. Today was day one of my period, and experiencing this nightmare every single month is certainly not what I signed up for. Yes, I love being a woman but all of this baggage is way too heavy for me to carry.

The pain surges in after every second, like it was planned or had a mission to end my life. One minute I’m holding my stomach, the next minute my back is hurting and next diarrhea and nausea set in.
All of these were happening simultaneously, reminding me of the pains of womanhood I have to deal with.

I was brought back to reality by another text from Derek, “You okay Princess?” My heart melted the moment I saw the text. How he notices every little detail still blows my mind.

“Not really, it’s that time of the month, babe,” I replied.

“Oh no, it’s 17th already?”

“Yes, darling it is”. Shutting my eyes I held it altogether.

“I’ll be there in ten, hang in there my love”. It felt like that was the cue to let the flood gate open as I cried like a child, not holding back, not caring about anything, I let it all out.

In less than 10 minutes Derek was at my door. Using the last of my energy, I crawled to the door and slowly opened it.

Without saying a word he gave me the biggest and warmest hug that I have ever gotten. There I was in his arms crying uncontrollably as I struggled to survive not just for this month but the many months to come.

Truly, being a woman is a full-time job and hey, I’m stuck with this job for life.
