A Teenage Mistake
I remembered it just like yesterday, the images still feels real, and the voices in the background as loud and clear as it was so many years ago.
A crazy event that would have made me a murderer at a young age, an event that was bound to affect me later in life.
After taking a few driving classes I was super pumped, I was ready for the road or so I thought.
In a matter of minutes, my life flashed in front of my eyes. Death was staring me in the eyes and leaving no room for me to think or say goodbye to the ones I love.
“Avery! Avery! Avery!” I heard my friends call out.
“Stop the car, Avery! Hit the brake! Hit it now! They called out again.
I was doing it, I was hitting the brake, I was doing it the exact way the instructor had taught us in driving school.
The car didn’t stop, it didn’t! Instead, it was going so fast just like in car races.
The more I slammed the brake, the more I panicked. The brake was not working.
Out of nowhere, I saw a little girl a few meters from me. With her little teddy bear, she smiled as she cat walked, nothing mattered to her.
“Jesus! No!!! Get away from there!” I screamed as the car lodged in her direction. She didn’t see the car nor did she know what was happening.
I saw her but I couldn’t stop, the brake had failed me. The stupid brake had almost killed a child.
Palms sweating, heart racing, tears rolling down my eyes, and gripping the steering like my life depended on it, I prayed. I prayed for a miracle, a miracle that I didn’t know how or when it was going to happen.
While I kept slamming the brake and nothing happened, I thought to turn the steering a bit, and boom! I crashed into a tree and the impact brought the car to a halt. The tree came crashing on the car.
The miracle did happen.
“Thank you, Jesus,” was all I could say whilst sobbing and robbing my hands together.
I was badly hurt but that didn’t matter as I had just escaped death and a murder charge.
I stared at the girl in the mirror, she was fine, she continued playing with her teddy bear oblivious to what had just happened.
Not able to move any part of my body other than my hands, I stayed still, thanking God and sobbing uncontrollably.
“Avery! Avery! Are you okay?” I heard my friends call out in unison. They had all been chasing the car from the junction and it was quite a distance.
In no time they were by my side, pulling me out of the damaged car. The more they tried to pull me out the more pain I experienced. It felt like my body was about to be divided into two halves. One part was going to be with the damaged car.
With the help of my friends, I was successfully pulled out and rushed to the hospital.
While on the hospital bed, I made a mental note not to drive until I was 25 years. If driving meant almost killing a child, then I’d have to pass on it till whenever I was ready.
I’m more than 25 years old today and I still have PTSD from driving. I can be so bold to do anything but don’t give me a car to drive.
One foolish act of trying to prove myself as a good driver years ago had almost altered and ruined my chances of driving or having a car. Will that change? I have no idea.
The crazy things we do as teenagers can sometimes affect us later in life.

Oh do sad. I'm sure Avery must have been so scared.
Driving a car is not child's play at all and I'm glad no death occurred.

Yeah she was, glad nothing happened at the end😃
Yes ooo
Ah! That is the craziest thing to do, who even ask you to drive when you are not an expert. Thank God the miracle really happened and I'm glad nothing happened to you too. Thank you for sharing.

Truly miracles exist, so glad that Avery got to experience one.
Thanks for stopping by😃
I almost thought this was a real life story, you made a perfect description of the scene especially before the car crashed to the tree. Glad it all ended with no big damage but I hope Avery gets to overcome her fear of driving a car again.
I pray she overcomes it real fast.
Thank you so much for your beautiful words😃
Hehehe , some teenagers will always want to have an experience of what adult do...such a crazy try but glad it didn't end in pain

Hehehehe yes Ma'am, Avery won't try this again😃
Smiles.
Its alright ma.
Avery, like some teenagers are always eager to do things considered dangerous. Driving after a few lessons is not wise but teenagers do not always consider the danger but only the thrill. The accident was averted because of the tree - the child was unharmed and so was she. Avery was indeed lucky.

She was indeed lucky, having a near death experience like that changed her life in so many ways. We are so glad that nothing bad happened that day.
Thank you so much for reading.

Hehehehe thank you so much for your concern baby girl🥰🥰
You are welcome 🤗
oh...drivers face so many surprises on the road....maybe that's why I amn't a driver still;) I know some tragical cases, Not all drivers are careful unfortunately;(
That trauma can be no joke! Shit happens in life, and I guess technically our brains are still developing until we hit 25. So wanting to wait makes total sense and I get it.
But (and I know this is a old post but since we are friends now I went looking haha) I would say that you didn't hurt anyone and you were able to learn from a mistake and be better going forward. Try driving again in a safe controlled environment to build up the courage again. Driving can be freedom for some and being limited because of past trauma is only effecting you negatively!
But as someone who lost a family member to a drunk driver years ago, I know all too well that life and end in a instant and so 1) Try not to live in fear or regret as it negatively effects you. Learn from mistakes and grow and do better. 2) You didn't do anything unforgettable and if you focus on the good things of that accident. You started off bad but you saved a kids life and did the right thing as a driver.
Okay my therapy TED Talk is over :)
but HI, keep up the posts!
