Visiting the Monument to the Victims of the Maine and the Máxima Art Gallery in El Vedado, Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺 [ENG] [ESP]

Did you know? In Havana, very close to the Malecón and to the west of the Hotel Nacional in the Vedado district, there is a monument honoring the victims of the USS Maine. There, you can travel back in time while admiring its statues and 20th-century history. Interesting, right?

Well, I will also show you the personal exhibition of the Cuban artist Ernesto Villanueva, displaying on canvas his most abstract works from the series "Summer in the Garden." Join me on this wonderful adventure 😉!

¿Sabías qué? En la habana muy cerca del malecón al oeste del Hotel Nacional, en el distrito de Vedado, se encuentra ubicado un monumento en honor a las víctimas del USS Maine y donde viajarás al tiempo admirando sus estatuas e historia del siglo XX. Interesante, ¿verdad?

Pues además les enseñaré la exposición personal del artista cubano Ernesto Villanueva mostrando en el lienzo, sus obras más abstractas de la serie "Summer in the Garden". ¡Acompáñame en esta maravillosa aventura 😉!

Starting my journey at the famous Maine Monument, I must say that this magnificent piece of architecture and sculpture is located very close to Havana's seawall (or "malecón"). It is dedicated to the sailors who lost their lives in the explosion of the battleship USS Maine.

The warship mysteriously exploded in Havana Bay in 1898, which served as a pretext for the United States to declare war on Spain.

Comenzando mi viaje por el famoso monumento del Maine, les comentaré que esta magnífica arquitectura y escultura está muy cercana del malecón capitalino. Dedicada a los marineros que perdieron la vida en la explosión del acorazado USS Maine.

El buque de guerra explotó misteriosamente en la Bahía de La Habana durante 1898 y sirvió a EE.UU como pretexto para declarar la guerra a España.

The history of this ship is marked by a rather dramatic event: the Maine exploded in a somewhat mysterious way, resulting in a considerable number of victims. Even today, the exact sequence of events is not known, and it is unclear whether it was an attack or an accident.

This imposing ship, belonging to the United States Navy, was sent to the port of Havana towards the end of the 19th century to protect American citizens on the island, as Cuba was fighting a war to gain independence from Spanish colonial rule.

La historia de este buque está marcada por un suceso bastante dramático y es que el Maine explotó de manera un tanto misteriosa, dejando un saldo considerable de víctimas. Aun hoy en día no se conoce exactamente cómo sucedieron los hechos, y no está claro si fue un atentado o un accidente.

Este imponente barco perteneciente a la armada de los Estados Unidos fue enviado al puerto de La Habana hacia finales del Siglo XIX, para proteger a los ciudadanos estadounidenses que se encontraban en la isla ya que en Cuba se libraba la guerra para alcanzar la independencia del coloniaje español.

This exquisite work by engineer Félix Cabarrocas was inaugurated by President Alfredo Zayas on March 8, 1925, with the attendance of General Pershing and Admiral Dayton. It has been preserved almost intact to this day, and I say almost because it has undergone some changes from its original state.

On the capitals of its two columns, there once stood an eagle with its wings spread, a symbol of the American nation. Today, only a large empty space can be seen, since in the second year after the triumph of the popular revolution that overthrew the prevailing government, and following the break in relations with the United States government, the eagle was torn down.

Esta exquisita obra del ingeniero Félix Cabarrocas fue inaugurada por el Presidente Alfredo Zayas el día 8 de marzo de 1925, con asistencia del General Pershing y del Almirante Dayton. Se conserva casi intacto hasta nuestros días, y digo casi porque ha sufrido algunos cambios de cómo era originalmente.

Sobre los capiteles de sus dos columnas existió un águila con sus alas extendidas, símbolo de la nación estadounidense. Actualmente sólo se puede apreciar un gran vacío, ya que al segundo año de triunfar la revolución popular que derrocó al gobierno imperante y al romperse las relaciones con el gobierno de Estados Unidos, el águila fue derribada.

Of this beautiful monument, it has been said that it is the tangible and permanent expression of the Cuban sentiment.

At the base of each column, one can observe the cannons and the anchor chains that belonged to the Maine, which were recovered from the seabed. Currently, I believe they must be some of the few remaining parts of the ship that are preserved, as the ship itself was raised from the bottom of the bay and dynamited. These two preserved cannons are truly impressive, and being here, I can only feel a great respect for these relics and the meaning they hold.

De este bello monumento se ha dicho que es la exteriorización tangible y permanente del sentimiento cubano.

Se puede observar en la base de cada columna los cañones y las cadenas del ancla que pertenecieron al Maine y que fueron rescatados del fondo marino. Actualmente creo que deben ser unos de los pocos restos que se conservan del buque, ya que el mismo fue sacado del fondo de la Bahía y dinamitado. Estos dos cañones que se conservan son realmente impresionantes, y al estar aquí solo puedo sentir un gran respeto por estas reliquias y por el significado que encierran.

On a large pedestal at the foot of its columns, facing away from the sea, stand two imposing bronze statues, which symbolize the countries of the United States and Cuba.

The rear part contains a bronze plaque bearing the name of each and every one of the victims of the disaster.

Sobre un gran pedestal a los pies de sus columnas y mirando en dirección opuesta al mar se encuentran dos imponentes estatuas de bronce, las que simbolizan a los países de Estados Unidos y Cuba.

Y la parte trasera contiene una tarja de bronce en el nombre de todos y cada una de las víctimas del siniestro.

The video shows the imposing monument, and you can observe the architecture of this piece of our history, which helps us not to forget the events of the past in my country.

El video muestra el impotente monumento y se observa la arquitectura de este suceso de nuestra historia y que nos ayuda a no olvidar los hechos del pasado en mi país.

Leaving the first tour, as I captured some images of the city, I hurried off to meet with the Cuban artist Ernesto Villanueva at the Máxima Gallery of contemporary Cuban art.

Saliendo del primer recorrido, pues capturé algunas imágenes de la ciudad y salí corriendo al encuentro con el artista cubano Ernesto Villanueva en la Galería Máxima de arte contemporáneo cubano.

The creator was currently on the island of Tenerife, but had several works permanently housed in the gallery.

As you can see, most of the paintings feature abstract and playful symbolism with vibrant colors. In them, each visitor finds peace and tranquility.

El creador actualmente se encontraba en la isla de Tenerife, pero albergaba varias obras de forma permanente en la galería.

Como se puede apreciar la mayoría de los cuadros son de simbología abstracta y juguetona en cuanto a colores vivos. Donde cada uno de los visitantes encuentra en las pinturas paz y tranquilidad.

Villanueva reflects an interest in the construction of the image, the balance between the geometric and the organic, and an interaction with narratives of memory, identity, and transformation.

In the exhibition, the artist has skillfully navigated between the figurative and the abstract, creating pieces that evoke both the personal and the collective.

Villanueva refleja un interés por la construcción de la imagen, el equilibrio entre lo geométrico y lo orgánico, y una interacción con las narrativas de la memoria, la identidad y la transformación.

El artista en la exhibición ha sabido transitar entre lo figurativo y lo abstracto, logrando piezas que evocan tanto lo personal como lo colectivo.

Part of all the paintings are from the series "Summer in my Garden," which invites us to enter his garden, a distinct space of isolation that prepares the viewer to relax and reflect.

Every stroke, every line, and every composition in his work is an invitation to explore new ways of seeing and feeling the world.

Parte de todas las pinturas son de la serie "Summer in my Garden” donde nos invita a adentrarnos en su jardín, un espacio distinto de aislamiento que prepara al espectador para relajarse y reflexionar.

Cada trazo, cada línea y cada composición en su producción son una invitación a explorar nuevas formas de ver y sentir el mundo.

In Fanego's opinion, his abstract experiments are a feast for the eyes, as they celebrate life, nature, and art.

Like any painting with a personal root, it is an open window. There is nothing more stimulating than entering through one of them to approach a work that begins not with words, but with stains, colors, collages, diverse experiments..., thus challenging us to interpret it with the play of our imagination.

A juicio de Fanego, sus experimentos abstractivos constituyen una fiesta para los ojos, pues celebran la vida, la naturaleza y el arte.

Como todo cuadro que posee una raíz personal es ventana abierta, nada más estimulante que penetrar por una de ellas para acercarnos a una obra que comienza siendo concebida no con palabras sino con manchas, colores, collages, experimentos diversos..., y que nos lanza así el reto de interpretarla con el juego de nuestra imaginación.

As for me, personally, I loved the exhibition, his art style, and the unique ways of representing his thoughts on the canvas.

A mí, en lo personal me encanto la exposición, su estilo de arte y formas únicas de representar su pensamiento en el cuadro.

In conclusion, this adventure was very interesting, spectacular, and exciting, both at the Máxima gallery with artist Villanueva and at the Maine Monument, expressing the history, architecture, and sculptures designed for those who perished in the ship's explosion.
