Nigeria Advances to The Next Round In The AFCON Competition

Source

The African Cup Of Nations has been going up for about three weeks now and this will be my first post covering a match in the tournament. The AFCON has been superb this year and a lot of people are talking about the competition. It started as a not serious competition because it is held during the domestic football season and now it ranks even higher than the Asian Cup which is ongoing now.

The AFCON has seen amazing moments and it just shows how talented African players are and that is not all the fan base has been crazy in the stadium and on the Internet. Two African countries went head to head on Twitter battling which country is better and the funny part is their argument sometimes breached out of football and other things like who has the best food, whose economy is better and so on. The country that has been on other countries' throats is Nigeria.

Nigerians don't back down when it comes to arguing with other countries on irrelevant matters as long as they win is all that matters. Last night Nigeria went head to head against Cameroon aka the Indomitable Lions in the round of sixteen of the AFCON. These two teams have a long history in the AFCON and Cameroon has failed to beat Nigeria since 2004. I had no clue Nigeria was facing Cameroon because I was focused on Barcelona Vs Villarreal which ended badly for the Catalan giant as they lost 5-3 at home.

Nigeria started the match strong and created a lot of chances. The first goal was scored in the 36th minute of the first half by Lookman and he was assisted by Victor Osimhen. Victor Osimhen who is the African best player of the year has been amazing for the Nigeria national team and his work rate on the pitch is visible, anytime you see Osimhen he is boosting his teammate's confidence to bring out the best in them and also his pressing upfront is top notch.

The Super Eagles kept their composure in the second half and denied Cameroon any attempts to get a shot on target. Cameroon decided to bring in Aboubakar in the 78th minute to get a late-minute goal which got me worried for a second because Aboubakar is an incredible player but the Super Eagles' defence looked him out and the Cameroonian had no positive impact for his team. Nigeria sealed the game in the 90th minute as Lookman scored his second goal and gave Nigeria a two-goal lead against Cameroon.

Ten minutes were added as extra time but still Cameroon could not find their way back and the match came to an end after the 10 minutes was up. Nigeria progressed to the quarter-final and will be up against Angola who have been impressive in the competition. It was a big victory for the Eagles and I hope it gets better in the next game. So guys that will be all for now. Thanks for stopping by and have a good day.
