Mate in 4 from My Recent Game - A Familiar Mating Pattern

Black to move and mate in 4

The position above was from my recent 3 minute blitz game in lichess.org. It's a familiar puzzle pattern that made me pause for a bit and check if there's a checkmate. I found the answer in a few seconds. Here's is the rest of the game.

The game started with 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e3 O-O 5. Bd3 d5 { E48 Nimzo-Indian Defense: Normal Variation, Classical Defense } The Nimzo-Indian was an opening by the great chess teacher and top player in the 1900's, Aron Nimzowitsch. He is the author of one my favorite chess books, "My System" so I play this defense against d4 c4 opening by White.

The game continued with 6. Nf3 Nbd7 7. Bd2 dxc4 8. Bxc4 c5 I achieved an equal position while activatating my pieces. It's the ideal situation for Black.

My plan was to saddle White with an isolated d pawn which could become a potential target. Having a clear target in a blitz game is an advantage as moves come naturally. 9. O-O cxd4 10. Nxd4 a6

White did not accomodate me and took with the Knight instead of the e pawn. I had to move a6 to guard the square b5 against invasion. The move also sets up b5 for a potential counterattack on the queenside but White has other plans. 11. Bxe6!

White has thrown the gauntlet and sacrificed a piece for two pawns. This is a common sacrifice that I've fallen victim to countless of times. It was made by White after nine seconds of thought, an eternity in a 3 minute blitz game. The position is still equal but if you're on the defending side as I was, it will be easy to make mistakes 11...fxe6 12. Nxe6 Qe7 13. Nxf8 Nxf8 14. Qb3+ Kh8

An inaccuracy, clearly the better move was Be6. But the position is still equal. 15. e4 Be6 16. Qa4 b5 17. Qc2 Rc8

At this point I felt I already have the initiative having forced White to retreat. My pieces are more active than his. 18. Qd1 Rd8 19. Qf3??

A blunder, leaving the bishop undefended. 19....Rxd2 20. Nd5 Nxd5 21. exd5 Bxd5 22. Qf4 Ng6 23. Qb8+ Qf8 24. Qb6 Bc5 25. Qxa6

Now the above position was reached. I have often seen similar positions when solving puzzles with the back rank mate theme. There is no back rank mate here since White's queen side rook is defending the first rank but there's more than one way to skin a cat. 25....Rxf2 { White resigns. } 0-1

Mate is forced with 26. Rxf2 Qxf2+ 27. Kh1 Qxg2# or the longer version 26. h3 Rxg2+ 27. Kh1 Rxb2+ 28. Rf3 Bxf3#. I hope this position gets added on the lichess puzzle database.
